Chapter 19 - The Confession Beneath the Ruins

Claire fell to her knees beside Adrian, her hands immediately gripping his shoulders to pull him away from the hissing machinery.

"Don't move, your skin is chemical-burned," she ordered, her voice trembling as she used the hem of her linen jacket to wipe the stinging industrial oil from his eyes and neck.

Adrian gasped for air, his vision blurred, his hands blindly reaching out until his grease-stained fingers found her wrist.

"Claire..." he wheezed, his chest heaving as the chemical fumes tore through his lungs.

"Get back inside... don't let them take the files..."

"Shut up, Adrian!

You’re going into acute toxic shock," Claire shouted, turning toward the clinic doors.

"Orderly!

Bring a decontamination kit and two units of saline!

Now!"

Two young male orderlies sprinted down the driveway, hoisting Adrian between them and carrying him through the double doors as Victoria Sterling cursed furiously into her phone behind them.

They laid Adrian onto an emergency gurney in the trauma bay.

Claire worked with ruthless, clinical precision, cutting away his ruined shirt, flushing his blistered skin with neutralizing solution, and securing an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose.

His body was shaking violently with tremors.

The monitors beeped erratically as his blood pressure spiked, then plunged dangerously low.

"Push twenty milligrams of dexamethasone," Claire ordered the head nurse, her hands steady despite the cold sweat dripping down her back.

"And prep a chest x-ray.

His lungs took a direct vapor inhalation."

Adrian reached up with a trembling hand, catching Claire’s wrist just as she picked up a syringe.

He pulled off the oxygen mask, his lips cracked and pale.

"Claire... listen to me," he whispered, his voice rattling with fluid.

"I don't have... much time before Harold... seals the probate court."

"Save your strength, Adrian.

You did enough damage outside," Claire said, trying to reattach the mask.

"No," Adrian insisted, his grip on her wrist surprisingly fierce despite his fading pulse.

"The blueprints... they were only half the truth.

My father didn't bury the waste alone.

There is a safety deposit box... Vault 404... at the First Chicago Federal Bank on Michigan Avenue."

Claire stopped, looking into his bloodshot eyes.

"What is in Vault 404?"

"The unredacted ledger," Adrian choked out, a thin line of blood bubbling at the corner of his mouth.

"The checks... the payoff receipts to the zoning board, to Judge Vance... and the original laboratory tests from 1996.

It’s the key... to destroying the Sterling syndicate forever.

The safety deposit key... it’s sewn into the lining... of my watch strap."

He collapsed back onto the gurney, his eyes rolling back as the cardiac monitor wailed with a sudden, terrifying arrhythmia.

"Code blue!" the nurse screamed.

"He’s in ventricular fibrillation!"

"Crash cart!" Claire ordered, her voice echoing off the tile walls as she leaped onto the side of the gurney to begin chest compressions.

"Charge to two hundred!

Clear!"

The electric shock lifted Adrian’s limp body from the mattress.

The monitor gave a single, long beep, then stuttered back into an unstable, fragile rhythm.

Claire stood over him, breathing heavily, her hands resting on his bare, scarred chest.

Slowly, she looked down at his left wrist.

The heavy platinum wristwatch was coated in mud and oil.

With trembling fingers, she unbuckled the strap, turned it over, and felt the small, hard outline of a brass safe-deposit key stitched inside the leather.
