Chapter 15 - The Fracture of Trust

The following morning broke gray and cold over the city.
Julian entered Claire’s office on the clinic’s second floor, finding her asleep at her desk, her head resting on a stack of toxicology reports.
He set a warm cup of tea beside her hand and gently touched her shoulder.
"Claire," he murmured.
Claire sat up instantly, her eyes bloodshot, her dark hair coming loose from its pins.
"Did the lab return the water analysis?" she asked immediately, blinking against the harsh fluorescent light.
"Yes," Julian said, his expression grim.
He set Adrian’s black folder down on top of her medical journals.
Claire looked at the embossed leather binder, then up at Julian’s strained face.
"What is this?"
"Adrian came to see me last night," Julian answered quietly.
Claire stood up so abruptly her chair rolled back against the filing cabinet.
"Adrian?
Here?
Julian, I told you I will never allow that man near this sanctuary!
He has nothing to do with this place!"
"Read it, Claire," Julian insisted, his voice heavy with an emotion she couldn't immediately decipher.
"The heavy-metal contamination isn't a random city infrastructure failure.
It’s an old industrial dump site buried by Richard Kane twenty years ago.
Adrian brought me the engineering blueprints of the underground vaults."
Claire opened the folder with shaking hands, her eyes racing over the faded schematics, the chemical serial numbers, and the sickeningly familiar signature of Adrian’s father.
"My mother died of respiratory failure twenty miles from here," Claire whispered, her voice cracking as a wave of nausea hit her.
"She worked at the packaging plant down the river.
She breathed this air.
She drank this water."
She looked up at Julian, tears of blinding rage spilling onto her cheeks.
"And Adrian kept this hidden from me?
For five years of marriage, he knew his family’s wealth was built on the slow murder of people like my mother?"
"He didn't know until yesterday," Julian said defensively, then immediately stopped, realizing how his defense sounded.
Claire stared at him, her gaze suddenly cold, sharp, and terrifyingly distant.
"Why are you defending him, Julian?"
Julian swallowed hard, looking down at the carpet.
"Because he didn't just bring the files, Claire.
Last night, he gave up his entire personal estate to Vance & Sterling to stop Harold from closing our doors.
He bought us two years of immunity.
He ruined himself financially to keep this clinic open."
Claire let out a ragged, bitter laugh that sounded like tearing silk.
"Do you think that makes him a hero, Julian?
Do you think thirty million dollars cleans the blood off his father’s name, or washes away the five years he treated me like an ornamental piece of furniture?
He doesn't want to save this clinic.
He wants to buy my forgiveness.
He wants to be the martyr who rescues the poor, broken Claire Bennett so he can sleep at night."
She slammed the folder shut and shoved it back across the desk.
"Call our contractors.
We are draining those vaults ourselves.
Not with Kane money.
May you like
Not with Adrian’s blood guilt.
With our own hands."
