Chapter 4 - The Audit of Betrayal

The Kane Tower rose seventy-two stories above Michigan Avenue like a monument to cold efficiency.

At eight o'clock the following morning, Adrian Kane strode through the revolving glass doors.

His suit was clean, but his face was hollow, his jaw bristled with graying stubble, and his dark eyes burned with dangerous fire.

The security guards backed away from their desks, terrified by the sheer hostility radiating from him.

He did not take the private executive elevator; he walked straight through the middle of the sixty-eighth floor where the Kane Trust operations were housed.

Fifty employees froze mid-keystroke as the billionaire slammed open the glass doors of the administrative suite.

Vanessa Reed was seated at her corner desk, dressed in a sharp beige linen suit, sipping a green tea.

When she saw Adrian, her posture stiffened for a split second before she arranged her face into an expression of warm, maternal concern.

"Adrian," she said softly, standing up with a leather-bound folder.

"I heard what happened at the cemetery."

"I cannot tell you how deeply sorry I am."

"I was drafting a formal letter of condolence to Claire on behalf of the foundation—"

Adrian did not stop until he was six inches from her mahogany desk.

He slammed both hands down on the polished wood with a sound like a gunshot.

The porcelain tea cup shattered, hot liquid pooling across her pristine documents.

Vanessa flinched backward, her breath catching in her throat.

"Open your computer," Adrian whispered.

"Adrian, please, let us discuss this in your private office—"

"Open the server logs, Vanessa."

"Now."

Vanessa’s hands trembled as she entered her biometric passkey into the secure terminal.

Adrian pulled the heavy leather monitor toward himself, turning it to face his cold eyes.

"Show me the transaction log from Sunday night between midnight and five in the morning."

Vanessa tried to swallow, but her throat had gone bone dry.

"Adrian, the system archives automated flags after forty-eight hours—"

"Do you take me for an idiot?" Adrian roared, his voice reverberating through the entire open-plan floor.

"I built this proprietary banking architecture myself ten years ago!"

His fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed.

He bypassed the user interface and dropped into the raw SQL transaction ledger.

Line 4,892 appeared on the screen in bright white monospace font:

"2:14 AM — REQUEST #9928 — EMERGENCY MEDICAL OVERRIDE — $30,000.00 — APPLICANT: CLAIRE BENNETT KANE."

"STATUS: REJECTED BY USER: VREED_ADMIN."

Adrian leaned closer, reading the system metadata.

There had been no system error.

There had been no secondary compliance flag from the bank.

Beside the rejection, Vanessa had entered a manual bypass reason:

"INSUFFICIENT MARITAL ASSET ENTITLEMENT — UNAUTHORIZED FAMILY EXPENSE."

Adrian slowly turned his head to look at her.

"You told me the bank required two independent director signatures."

Vanessa backed against the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the Chicago River.

"Adrian... she was draining funds that were designated for the foundation’s portfolio."

"She was your wife, Vanessa!" Adrian yelled, slamming the monitor so hard the glass cracked along the frame.

"The trust documents state explicitly that Claire has unconditional discretionary authority for medical emergencies up to five hundred thousand dollars!"

"She didn't need my signature!"

"She didn't need your approval!"

"All she needed was you to clear the automated gateway!"

Vanessa’s professional mask finally cracked, revealing the bitter, resentful sneer beneath.

"And why should she have five hundred thousand dollars at her fingertips?" Vanessa hissed, her voice dropping into venom.

"A girl from a Bridgeport tenement who worked as a receptionist when you found her!"

"I spent ten years building this empire with you, Adrian!"

"I worked fourteen-hour days!"

"I managed your scandals, I cleaned up your investments, I stood by your side through every hostile takeover!"

"And you married a girl who brought nothing to the table!"

"Her mother was a drain on the private medical reserves!"

"I was protecting your legacy!"

Adrian looked at Vanessa as if seeing a venomous reptile that had lived in his pocket for a decade.

"You let an innocent woman die because of your jealousy?"

"She was old and sick anyway!" Vanessa snapped desperately.

"She would have died in three months regardless of that thirty thousand dollars!"

A dead silence fell across the sixty-eighth floor.

Every staff member, analyst, and executive was watching in paralyzed horror.

Adrian stepped toward Vanessa until he was towering over her.

"You are not protecting my legacy, Vanessa."

"You have destroyed it."

"You are fired."

Vanessa stared at him, her eyes wide with shock.

"You cannot fire me."

"I know every private bank account in Zurich, Singapore, and the Caymans."

"I know where the corporate bodies are buried, Adrian."

Adrian pulled his phone from his pocket and pressed a three-digit extension.

"This is Adrian Kane."

"Send corporate security and the city fraud division to the sixty-eighth floor."

"I want Miss Reed escorted out of the building in handcuffs."

"And freeze every personal asset, passport, and accounts linked to her name pending an emergency forensic audit."

Vanessa’s knees gave way, and she slumped against the glass wall.

"Adrian... please... you can't do this to me!"

"You let my mother-in-law suffocate to death on a hospital bed over thirty thousand dollars," Adrian said, his voice deadly calm.

"I am going to ensure you spend the next fifteen years behind steel bars."

He turned his back on her and walked toward his corner office, leaving her sobbing on the floor as the security guards stepped through the glass doors.
