Chapter 9 - The Fortress of Glass and Cedar

The morning sun broke over the snow-dusted peaks of the Swiss Alps, painting the sky in brilliant hues of lavender and gold.
Lake Zurich stretched out beneath the horizon like a pristine sheet of sapphire glass, undisturbed by the chaos of the Western hemisphere.
It had been three weeks since the night of Don Anthony's gala, and my life had transformed beyond recognition.
My new office occupied the entire thirty-fourth floor of Hayes International's global headquarters on the Bahnhofstrasse.
The walls were made of soundproof floor-to-ceiling glass, offering an unobstructed view of the pristine alpine landscape.
Gone were the dark mahogany paneling, hidden surveillance cameras, and whispered threats of the Moretti compound.
Here, everything was light, transparency, and clean, unyielding enterprise.
I sat at my wide Scandinavian oak desk, reviewing the final acquisition reports for an Atlantic green-shipping corridor.
Under my direct leadership over the last twenty days, our logistics division had secured three major maritime contracts formerly tied to Chicago syndicates.
I knew the vulnerabilities of the old shipping routes better than anyone alive, because I had spent seven years auditing Vincent's front companies.
Without breaking a single law, I was methodically starving his legitimate business facades of their international footholds.
A light, rhythmic knock interrupted my concentration, and Alexander stepped into the office holding two porcelain cups of espresso.
He wore an immaculate charcoal tailored suit, looking every bit the global visionary who commanded billions without shedding a drop of blood.
"You have been working since six in the morning, Claire," Alexander noted, setting a cup on my desk with a warm smile.
"The Board of Directors is already astonished by your Q4 turnaround projections."
"Work has always been my sanctuary, Alexander," I admitted, taking a sip of the rich, dark brew.
"For years, Vincent made me feel like my strategic intellect was merely a cute hobby to occupy my days while he ran the real world."
"Vincent Moretti is a violent anachronism clinging to shadows and intimidation," Alexander replied, leaning against the edge of the desk.
"He failed to realize that the true engine behind his logistics dominance was the brilliant woman sitting in his study balancing his books."
I smiled, looking out toward the snow-capped mountains across the lake.
"He is furious, Alexander."
"Marcus Vance informed me yesterday that Vincent has hired three private corporate investigation firms in Frankfurt and London."
"He finally realized I did not leave Chicago to hide in a convent."
"He knows I am your Senior Vice President."
"Let him search, Claire," Alexander said, his tone turning fiercely protective yet remarkably composed.
"Switzerland is not Cook County."
"His hired guns have no jurisdiction here, and the Swiss Federal Police do not look kindly upon mafia thugs crossing their borders."
"More importantly, you are Hayes International's most valuable executive."
"An attack on you is a declaration of war against our global conglomerate and every sovereign fund backing us."
"I do not fear his violence anymore, Alexander," I said softly, meeting his steady blue eyes.
"I spent seven years trembling whenever his boots sounded in the hallway, wondering what mood he would bring home."
"Now, the only emotion I have left for Vincent Moretti is complete, unadulterated indifference."
Alexander looked at me for a long moment, a quiet warmth softening his aristocratic features.
"You deserve this peace, Claire."
"And you deserve someone who honors your strength instead of trying to extinguish it."
A delicate tension settled between us, unspoken yet undeniable, built on mutual respect and weeks of shared purpose.
Before either of us could say more, the secure intercom on my desk chimed twice.
My Swiss secretary's voice came through the speaker, crisp and urgent.
"Mrs. Bennett, there is an urgent international priority courier downstairs from the United States Consulate."
"It is an emergency legal injunction filed under the Moretti family seal."
May you like
Alexander and I exchanged a sharp glance as I pressed the button.
"Send the courier up immediately, Greta."
