Chapter 6 - The Ledger of Treason and Perfume

Don Anthony leaned forward on his gold-topped cane, his ancient, rheumy eyes narrowing into two icy points of calculation.

The high-society murmurs died out until the opulent ballroom of the Drake Hotel felt like a vacuum before a lightning strike.

Vincent stood motionless between Alexander and me, his tailored chest rising and falling with suppressed, violent fury.

"A birthday present, Claire?" Don Anthony asked, his gravelly baritone rumbling through the microphone at the head table.

"You bring an outsider into our inner sanctum, on my milestone year, and you speak of gifts?"

"With all due respect, Grandfather, this is not an ordinary tribute," I replied, my voice steady, carrying without an ounce of tremor.

"It is the truth that has been intentionally kept from you, from Vincent, and from the entire Moretti council."

Sophia’s knuckles turned bone-white where she clutched her emerald evening clutch.

"Claire, please, I beg of you," Sophia sobbed quietly, taking half a step toward the patriarch.

"If this is about my mistake with the birthday fragrance, I have already repented every single second!"

"I never wanted you to suffer, Claire!"

"Silence, Sophia," Don Anthony commanded without even glancing in her direction.

"Let my daughter-in-law speak."

I reached into Alexander’s breast pocket, pulling out a sleek metallic tablet synced directly to the ballroom's multimedia display.

The massive projection screens behind the dais flickered to life, drowning the birthday floral crest in harsh, digital illumination.

A murmur rippled through the gathered capos, judges, and corporate financiers as an audio waveform expanded across the screen.

"This is an encrypted recording from my former executive assistant, Maya Lin, recorded three days before my birthday," I announced.

I tapped the glass screen, and Maya's frightened voice filled the acoustic ceiling.

"Sophia called my personal cell phone on a Sunday afternoon... She specifically asked me to list your health restrictions, allergies, and skincare sensitivities..."

The audio clipped forward to Sophia’s distinct, melodic cadence, purring through the speakers.

"Maya darling, Claire mentioned a severe botanical weakness once, but I forget the Latin name... Is it lilies or orchids that make her throat swell?"

"It is lilies, Miss Reynolds," Maya’s recorded answer echoed with horrifying clarity.

"Derivatives of Lilium candidum cause instant anaphylaxis and respiratory failure; it is documented in the household medical logs."

"Thank you, Maya darling... Keep this strictly between us... We want Vincent’s surprise to take her breath away."

The phrase take her breath away hung in the frozen air like a butcher's blade.

Vincent’s head jerked toward Sophia, his hazel eyes widening in sudden, disbelieving horror.

"You called her assistant?" Vincent whispered, his voice dropping into a lethal, guttural register.

"You told me you selected the fragrance randomly off a boutique catalogue because of the crystal bottle."

"Vincent, no! Listen to me!" Sophia stammered, backing away from his towering shadow.

"I... I forgot! Maya mentioned so many flowers that day, and I got confused in the rush!"

"You did not get confused, Sophia," I cut in coldly, sliding my finger across the tablet to display the second exhibit.

The screen flashed with high-definition digital receipts and time-stamped surveillance stills from the Oak Street perfumery.

The boutique’s formulation order appeared in crisp black and white, bearing Sophia’s personal signature and credit card receipt.

The master chemist’s warning was written directly into the margin: Client insisted on five-fold Lilium absolute concentration despite toxicity advisory.

"You did not just buy a bottle," I said, looking directly into Sophia’s pale, sweat-streaked face.

"You commissioned a bespoke weapon."

"You knew my husband’s blind spot was his protective instinct toward you."

"You calculated that when I suffocated in our penthouse, everyone would dismiss it as a tragic domestic mishap."

"And Vincent would be left free to comfort his grieving, innocent childhood sweetheart."

The entire ballroom exploded into an uproar of furious whispers and clinking crystal.

Ruthless mafia capos who had killed dozens of men stared at Sophia with utter disgust.

In their brutal world, poison was the weapon of cowards, and targeting a Don's wife was an unforgivable sacrilege.

Vincent turned fully toward Sophia, his hands clenching into fists so tight that his knuckles turned gray.

"You lied to me," Vincent said, every syllable dripping with cold, venomous venom.

"You held my hand in the hospital corridor and swore before God that you only wanted to celebrate my wife."

"Vincent, please!" Sophia dropped to her knees on the marble floor, her emerald gown bunching around her knees.

"I did it because I love you! She never appreciated you! She was always cold and distant!"

"She did not deserve to sit on the Moretti throne beside you!"

May you like

"You tried to murder my wife in my own home," Vincent roared, stepping toward her with his hand instinctively reaching toward his inner lapel.

Before Vincent could take another step, a sharp, thunderous crack echoed through the cavernous room.
