Chapter 10 - The Shadow Reaching Across the Sea

The courier envelope was thick, sealed with crimson wax, and stamped with the official insignia of the Cook County Superior Court.

I sliced through the wax seal with an ivory letter opener, pulling out a multi-page legal emergency summons.

Vincent had not just contested the divorce; he had filed an emergency injunction claiming financial embezzlement and corporate espionage.

He alleged that my departure with proprietary logistical data had damaged the Moretti enterprise's maritime operations.

It was a desperate, transparent tactic designed to freeze my assets and force my personal appearance before a Chicago judge under his payroll.

Attached to the formal legal petition was a handwritten note on Vincent’s personal stationery.

The handwriting was sharp, jagged, and aggressive:

You think the Swiss Alps can protect you from what belongs to me, Claire?

You stripped my honor in front of my grandfather, you took my legitimate shipping lines, and you parade around with Hayes.

I do not care about the business, and I never cared about the money.

You are my wife.

I am boarding my jet tonight.

Be at the Dolder Grand terrace at noon on Thursday, or I will dismantle Alexander Hayes’s European shipping terminals port by port.

I am coming to collect what is mine.

I read the note twice, the cold words failing to produce the terror Vincent undoubtedly anticipated.

Instead, a low, quiet fury ignited deep within my chest.

He still viewed me as a possession, an absconded piece of luxury property that needed to be dragged back by the collar.

Alexander picked up the handwritten letter from my desk, his eyes scanning the aggressive scrawl.

A dangerous, icy calm settled over Alexander’s features, transforming the gentle businessman into a formidable titan of industry.

"He is making a fatal mistake," Alexander said coldly, tossing the note back onto the blotter.

"Threatening Hayes International’s maritime terminals is a direct violation of international maritime security protocols."

"He thinks he is dealing with a rival Chicago gang that he can bully with drive-by shootings and bribes."

"He does not understand the kind of power that moves behind closed doors in Bern and Washington."

"He is not coming for Hayes International, Alexander," I said, rising from my leather chair and walking toward the panoramic window.

"He is coming because his ego cannot endure the reality that a woman walked away from him and thrived without his permission."

"If he lands in Zurich, he will bring his most loyal capos."

"He will try to corner me, intimidate me, and force me into a private jet back to Illinois."

"Then we will ensure he walks straight into a trap of his own making," Alexander said, stepping up beside me.

"I will notify the Swiss Federal Department of Justice and Police immediately."

"We will have Interpol monitors stationed at Zurich Airport the moment his private jet requests landing clearance."

"And what about his legal injunction?" I asked, looking down at the red-waxed court order.

"Our international legal counsel will file a countersuit in the Hague by tomorrow morning," Alexander assured me.

"We will present the Oak Street perfumery evidence and Maya Lin’s recorded testimony to federal prosecutors."

"We will expose the Moretti logistics network for the money-laundering front that it has always been."

"Vincent Moretti is not flying to Zurich to retrieve a runaway wife, Claire."

"He is flying directly into his own destruction."

I looked down at the calm, glittering expanse of Lake Zurich below.

For seven years, I had hidden my voice behind his towering, bloody shadow.

I had accepted his emotional cruelty, his infidelity of the heart, and the constant humiliation of Sophia’s presence.

Now, the hunter had become blind with rage, abandoning his fortified Chicago kingdom to pursue me across an ocean.

"Let him come, Alexander," I said, my voice carrying the unshakeable weight of absolute resolve.

"I spent seven years surviving the Moretti family."

"Now, it is time to end them."
