Chapter 19 - The Ambush in the Mediterranean Night

Midnight arrived in the port of Genoa cloaked in a thick, sulfurous maritime fog that swallowed the stars.
The massive logistics terminal of Hayes International sat completely dark, save for the blinking red warning beacons atop the high-altitude container cranes.
Inside the central automated control room, fifty feet above the water, Alexander and I stood beside the chief of the Italian Carabinieri’s tactical operations group.
Dozens of high-resolution thermal imaging monitors mapped the entire harbor in shades of eerie green and orange.
Thanks to Vincent’s comprehensive confession delivered four hours prior, the Italian military knew the exact coordinates of Marco’s incoming strike.
At twelve-twenty-one, a low, unregistered cigarette boat emerged from the fog, its engines running on muffled electric batteries.
Four dark figures clad in black tactical gear and carrying suppressed automatic weapons stepped onto the private service dock beneath the automated cranes.
Leading the squad was Marco Moretti himself, unwilling to delegate the ultimate revenge to underlings.
Marco carried a heavy military-grade satchel charge designed to obliterate the central server infrastructure and collapse the crane onto the administrative pavilion.
"Target acquired on dock four," the Carabinieri commander whispered into his tactical radio.
"Do not engage until they breach the threshold of container bay seven," I instructed calmly, watching the thermal monitor as Marco moved into the kill zone.
Marco kicked open the service door to the auxiliary power substation, stepping into the cavernous concrete hall with his weapon raised.
He paused, looking around the empty, silent room in sudden confusion.
There were no security guards, no panicked technicians, only a solitary speaker mounted on the concrete wall.
Suddenly, blinding, thirty-thousand-lumen stadium floodlights exploded to life, turning the midnight darkness into the blazing light of noon.
"Drop your weapons! State police! You are surrounded!" roared the Carabinieri commander over the public address system.
Marco shielded his blinded eyes, snarling like a cornered animal as he raised his assault rifle toward the catwalk.
"Claire!" Marco screamed into the blinding glare, his voice echoing off the corrugated steel containers.
"I know you're watching, you miserable traitor!"
"You destroyed this family! You destroyed Vincent! But you will never own this harbor!"
Marco lunged to detonate the timer on the satchel charge, his finger hovering over the digital trigger.
A single, suppressed rifle shot echoed from the crane superstructure above.
A precision sniper bullet struck Marco’s right shoulder, spinning him violently around as the satchel charge tumbled harmlessly across the concrete floor.
Before the other three mercenaries could raise their weapons, stun grenades detonated with deafening cracks, filling the bay with disorienting white smoke.
Dozens of elite tactical officers swarmed from behind the shipping containers, tackling the mercenaries to the ground with overwhelming, surgical force.
Marco lay pinned to the cold concrete, blood soaking through his designer tactical jacket, cursing violently as steel restraints locked around his wrists.
Alexander and I walked down the metal gantry staircase, accompanied by armed federal escorts, stopping five feet from the fallen mobster.
Marco craned his neck upward, his face twisted in a mask of impotent, bleeding fury.
"How did you know the landing point?" Marco spat, blood bubbling on his lips.
"No one outside my inner circle had those coordinates!"
"Your predecessor had them, Marco," I said, looking down at him with cold, absolute disdain.
"Vincent gave you up."
"He traded your entire life, your soldiers, and the remaining shreds of the Moretti syndicate for my safety."
Marco’s eyes widened in catastrophic shock, the realization that he had been betrayed by the very Don he tried to usurp shattering his sanity.
"Vincent sold out the family... for you?" Marco gasped in disbelief.
"Vincent realized too late that true power is not built on fear, poison, or intimidation," I replied softly.
"Take him away," Alexander commanded, his voice cold and definitive.

The Italian officers dragged Marco Moretti across the concrete floor, his screams of cursed rage dying out against the crashing rhythm of the Mediterranean waves.
The last violent remnant of the Chicago underworld had fallen, extinguished completely beneath the blinding lights of the new world I had built.
