Chapter 13 - The Ruin of the Reynolds Legacy

Thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean, the reverberations of Vincent’s reckless crusade shattered the very foundations of the Chicago underworld.

In a lavish underground office beneath the Palmer House, Don Anthony Moretti sat in his high-backed leather chair, watching the television screen in absolute silence.

The cable news ticker ran across the bottom of the screen in bold yellow text: CHICAGO SHIPPING MAGNATE VINCENT MORETTI ARRESTED IN ZURICH ON INTERNATIONAL FIREARMS AND EXTORTION CHARGES.

Beside Don Anthony stood the five remaining Caporegimes of the family, their faces grim, unyielding, and deeply ashamed.

"He abandoned his posts, jeopardized our legitimate shipping fronts, and allowed himself to be paraded like an animal before the international press," Don Anthony rasped, his voice ancient and hollow with bitter disappointment.

"All for an ego that could not accept a woman’s departure."

The old patriarch slammed his open palm onto the polished mahogany desk, rattling the antique inkwell.

"Vincent is stripped of his title as Don."

"The council will assume control of all logistics terminals immediately."

"Let him rot in the Swiss penitentiary until their federal prosecutors finish gutting him."

While Vincent's empire crumbled into the hands of his calculating cousins, Sophia Reynolds was living through her own personal hell on the fringes of the city.

Cast out by the Moretti family, her luxury condominium had been seized, her credit cards canceled, and her high-society friends had vanished like ghosts at dawn.

She was hiding in a dilapidated motel on the outskirts of Gary, Indiana, smoking cheap cigarettes and watching the news of Vincent’s arrest with bloodshot, frantic eyes.

Her final hope of Vincent returning to rescue her had evaporated into thin air.

Suddenly, the flimsy door of her motel room splintered into pieces beneath the violent kick of a federal battering ram.

"FBI! Federal agents! On your stomach! Hands behind your head!" shouted heavily armed agents in tactical vests, their assault rifles trained squarely upon her chest.

Sophia shrieked, falling backward onto the stained carpet as empty pill bottles and champagne flutes rolled under the bed.

"What is this? I am Sophia Reynolds! You cannot touch me!" she screamed hysterically.

Special Agent Miller stepped into the squalid room, holding an unsealed federal indictment signed by the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

"Sophia Reynolds, you are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder via chemical poisoning and intentional transmission of toxic substances," Agent Miller announced calmly.

"Your former assistant Maya Lin has turned state's evidence."

"The Oak Street perfumer gave us three hours of videotaped testimony detailing how you specifically requested a lethal concentration of botanical toxin."

"No! Vincent will protect me! Vincent is the head of the Moretti family!" she sobbed, clawing at the carpet as handcuffs clamped around her wrists.

"Vincent Moretti is currently in a maximum-security holding cell in Bern awaiting extradition hearings," Agent Miller countered with grim satisfaction.

"And his grandfather just handed us every private ledger you ever touched to clear the family’s name."

"You are alone, Miss Reynolds."

As they hauled her out of the cheap motel into the pouring Midwestern rain, reporters and cameras flashed through the gloom.

The golden girl who had poisoned my life with fake tears and malicious charm was dragged into the back of a federal cruiser, sobbing without an audience to believe her lies.
