Chapter 18 - The Penitent in the Cage

Rain battered against the thick, reinforced glass of the high-security federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Vincent Moretti sat at a bolted metal table inside an interrogation bunker, staring down at his bruised, calloused hands.
The orange prison jumpsuit was rough against his skin, a daily humiliation for a man who had worn bespoke cashmere for thirty-five years.
His once-powerful frame had grown noticeably leaner, his jaw sunken, and his eyes haunted by waking nightmares of my final words at the Drake Hotel.
The heavy hydraulic security doors hissed open, admitting Special Agent Miller alongside my trusted attorney, Marcus Vance.
Vincent lifted his head slowly, a sudden, desperate hunger flashing in his hollow eyes.
"Marcus..." Vincent rasped, leaning forward against the magnetic restraint chain attached to his ankle.
"Did Claire send you? Has she asked about my appeal? Does she know I refused to contest her property settlements?"
"Claire did not send me to offer you comfort, Vincent," Marcus replied coldly, sitting across the table without extending his hand.
"I am here because your reckless, bloodthirsty cousin Marco is about to sign the death warrant of every remaining Moretti asset on Earth."
Vincent’s expression turned instantly alert, the seasoned mafia strategist waking from months of psychological stupor.
"Marco?" Vincent growled, his hands gripping the metal table edge.
"Marco is a mindless savage who thinks power comes entirely from the barrel of an assault rifle."
"What has he done?"
"Marco has dispatched a hit squad to Genoa," Agent Miller stated bluntly, dropping a surveillance dossier onto the metal surface.
"He plans to bomb Hayes International’s automated control center and execute Claire before the international press tomorrow evening."
Vincent’s face drained of every drop of color, his pupils dilating in sheer, unadulterated horror.
"No..." Vincent breathed, his voice cracking like dry wood.
"No, he can't touch her... Claire has nothing to do with Chicago anymore! She walked away! She is innocent!"
"Marco does not care about innocence, Vincent," Marcus said with surgical cruelty.
"He blames Claire for your incarceration, Don Anthony’s death, and the financial ruin of the family."
"He wants to butcher her to prove he is stronger than you ever were."
Vincent buried his face in his hands, let out a ragged, agonizing moan that shook his entire body.
The horrifying realization washed over him like acid: the violent world he had built, nurtured, and prioritized over his wife was now hunting her down to extinguish her life.
His neglect had driven her into the arms of Alexander Hayes, his blind loyalty to Sophia had poisoned her, and his family’s blood feud was now tracking her across oceans.
He raised his head, tears cutting clean paths through the grime on his unshaven face.
"What do you need?" Vincent choked out, his arrogance completely shattered.
"Tell me what you need from me, Miller."
"I need the encrypted access codes to Marco’s offshore mercenary accounts and the private shipping vessel he used to bypass Italian customs," Miller demanded.
"If you give me that, we can alert Italian maritime special forces before they breach the port."
"I will give you everything," Vincent said without a split second of hesitation.
"I will give you the names of every corrupt port authority official in Genoa that Marco inherited from my father."
"I will give you the secret frequency channels my family used for black-market cargo landings along the Ligurian coastline."
"I will sign a full federal confession admitting to eighteen years of racketeering, narcotics transshipment, and political bribery."
Agent Miller stared at the former Don in utter astonishment.
"You understand that signing that confession waives every possibility of parole or early release, Vincent?"
"You will die an old man behind these concrete walls."
"I am already dead, Miller," Vincent whispered, picking up the government pen with trembling fingers.
"My life ended the night I watched Claire walk out of the Drake Hotel on another man's arm because I failed to protect her."
"If my confession saves her life... if it ensures that the monster my cousin has become never touches a hair on her head..."
May you like
Vincent pressed the pen firmly against the paper, signing his name with definitive, irreversible force.
"Then let me rot here forever."
