Chapter 11 - The Frozen Summit of Intimidation

The snow fell in soft, crystalline blankets across the manicured terrace of the Dolder Grand, clinging to the wrought-iron railings overlooking Zurich’s misty valleys.

The luxury resort stood high above the city like a grand fairytale fortress, serene and untouchable.

Yet at precisely eleven-forty-five on Thursday morning, an unnatural chill descended upon the stone terrace that had nothing to do with the winter air.

A convoy of black Mercedes-Benz limousines with diplomatic tinted windows pulled silently into the private circular driveway.

Four broad-shouldered men stepped out first, their heavy wool overcoats failing to conceal the telltale bulk of shoulder holsters and tactical communication earpieces.

Then stepped Vincent Moretti.

He looked imposing, dressed in a black cashmere coat with a beaver-fur collar, his jaw shadowed by dark stubble that betrayed sleepless nights.

In Chicago, the mere sight of his silhouette would have cleared entire city blocks.

His hazel eyes were bloodshot, sharp with an obsessive, manic energy that had consumed him ever since my departure.

He strode directly onto the terrace, his polished Italian leather boots crunching heavily through the fresh dusting of snow.

I was already seated at a corner table beneath a heated glass pergola, holding a warm porcelain cup of chamomile tea.

I wore an ivory tailored wool coat, my hair falling over my shoulders in loose, elegant waves.

Beside me on the marble table rested no weapons, no legal documents, only a single gold fountain pen and an unsealed envelope.

Alexander was nowhere in plain sight, but every discreet patron reading newspapers in the courtyard wore the earpieces of the Swiss Federal Intelligence Service.

Vincent halted three feet from my table, his chest heaving as though he had sprinted across an entire continent.

"You actually thought you could hide behind the Swiss Alps, Claire?" he demanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of possessive rage and profound desperation.

"I never hid, Vincent," I answered calmly, setting my tea down without a single rattle against the saucer.

"I accepted a legitimate corporate position in an open, sovereign country."

"You are my wife!" he spat, stepping closer and slamming his gloved fist against the iron perimeter of the table.

"You carry my surname, you live off the empire I bleed for, and you belong in Chicago at my side!"

"I never belonged to you, Vincent; you merely kept me as a hostage to your public image," I said, meeting his manic stare with total indifference.

"And as for your surname, the Swiss courts have already certified my legal return to Claire Bennett."

"A piece of foreign paper means nothing to me!" Vincent snarled, reaching inside his coat.

Two of his capos moved forward to flank him, their hands instinctively hovering near their concealed weapons.

"You are getting in that car right now, Claire," Vincent commanded, his eyes burning with an almost feral madness.

"If you refuse, I will personally burn Hayes International's commercial fleets until Alexander Hayes begs me on his knees for mercy."

"You will not be burning anything today, Mr. Moretti," a calm, resonant voice sounded from the arched corridor behind him.
