Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the Throne

An hour after the chaos in the boardroom cleared,

the corporate office returned to a quiet,

reverent silence.

Robert sat behind his massive mahogany desk,

staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the Chicago skyline.

Margaret stood near the bookshelf,

while I sat in one of the plush leather armchairs across from Robert.

Daniel was standing near the door,

looking desperate,

waiting for any sign of mercy from his parents.

"I had no idea,

Father,"

Daniel pleaded,

his voice trembling.

"I swear to you,"

"I thought Vanessa actually cared about me,"

"I thought Marcus was trying to help me step out from your shadow!"

Robert didn't look back at him.

"You allowed your weakness to jeopardize every employee in this building,

Daniel,"

Robert said,

his voice quiet yet devastatingly heavy.

"You let a pretty face and flattering words turn you into a weapon against your own blood."

"What do I do now?"

Daniel asked,

tears streaming down his face.

"You leave,"

Robert commanded.

"You will take a junior administrative role at our regional distribution center in Indiana."

"No corner office,"

"no company car,"

"no executive salary."

"If you want to work for this family again,"

"you will earn it from the absolute bottom."

Daniel looked at his mother,

hoping for intervention,

but Margaret merely turned her head away,

offering no comfort.

"Go,

Daniel,"

Margaret said quietly.

"Your bags are already packed at the house."

Daniel took a deep,

shaky breath,

looked at me with eyes full of regret,

and slowly walked out of the office,

closing the door behind him.

Once he was gone,

Robert turned his chair around to face me.

He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a leather-bound contract,

laying it in front of me.

"Emily,"

Robert said,

his expression earnest and full of respect.

"You saved this company today."

"You possessed the sharp intellect,"

"the patience,"

"and the absolute composure that my son clearly lacked."

"What is this?"

I asked,

looking down at the document.

"That is an offer for the position of Vice President of Corporate Strategy,"

Margaret answered,

stepping over and placing a warm hand on my shoulder.

"You spent five years putting your career on hold to support Daniel,"

"it is time you built your own empire."

"The salary is twice what Daniel was making,"

Robert added,

"along with stock options and a seat on the board of directors."

I looked at the contract,

feeling the sheer power of the moment settle into my chest.

I had entered this family as a quiet,

accommodating wife,

and now I was standing as an indispensable leader.

"I accept,"

I said,

picking up a pen and signing my name across the line.

"Under one condition."

Robert raised an eyebrow.

"Name it."

"Daniel never reports to my division,"

I declared,

looking him dead in the eye.

"He stays far away from my work."

Robert offered a rare,

May you like

approving smile.

"Agreed."
