Chapter 6 - The Price of Absolute Ruin

The heavy silence inside the VIP lounge lingered long after Vanessa’s screams faded down the hallway,

leaving Daniel slumped in the leather armchair,

his trembling fingers clutching the thick white envelope containing the divorce papers.

I stood near the polished rosewood table,

my emerald dress sweeping against the floor as I adjusted my emerald ring,

watching my husband realize that his grand life had dissolved into dust.

Margaret stood beside me,

her spine straight and unbending like iron,

staring down at her only son without a shred of pity left in her eyes.

"Sign them,

Daniel,"

she repeated,

her voice carrying the cold finality of a judge passing sentence.

"You tried to play a dangerous game with dangerous people,"

she added,

stepping closer to him.

"You compromised this family,"

"you compromised the company,"

"and worst of all,"

"you treated Emily as if she were disposable."

Daniel raised his bloodshot eyes to look at me,

tears spilling down his pale,

hollow cheeks.

"Emily,

please,"

he choked out,

his voice cracking under the weight of his utter despair.

"I made a catastrophic mistake,"

"I was tricked by Vanessa,"

"she manipulated my insecurities,"

"she made me feel like I was taking control of my own life!"

"You were never out of control,

Daniel,"

I replied softly,

my tone steady and entirely unyielding.

"You were just greedy,"

"you were vain,"

"and you believed you could betray me without paying a single dime of the price."

He opened the envelope with shaking hands,

pulling out the crisp pages of the settlement agreement.

The terms were ruthless,

giving me full ownership of our downtown condo,

half of his private investments,

and a clean financial break without any spousal support obligations toward him.

"You’re taking everything,"

he whispered,

staring at the legal jargon.

"I am taking back what belongs to me,"

I corrected him,

pulling a gold pen from my clutch bag and laying it on the armrest next to him.

"You signed away your integrity the moment you held her hand in that mall,"

"now sign away the legal right to ever call me your wife again."

Robert Bennett pushed open the double doors of the lounge,

his face dark with controlled fury as he glanced at the scene.

"The press has been managed,"

Robert announced in a stern,

booming tone.

"Vanessa Reed will be held without bail until corporate security finishes auditing her accounts."

He turned his sharp gaze toward Daniel,

his expression filled with disgust.

"As for you,"

Robert continued,

"your resignation as Vice President of Operations will be announced on Monday morning."

Daniel gasped,

dropping the pen onto the floor.

"Father,

no!"

"You can't strip me of my position!"

"I’ve worked for Bennett Enterprises for seven years!"

"You didn't work for it,"

Robert snapped fiercely.

"You inherited the path,"

"and then you handed our corporate credentials to an espionage agent because you wanted to play the hero."

"Sign the papers for Emily,"

"or I will have the board initiate criminal charges against you for gross negligence and failure of fiduciary duty."

The threat hung heavy in the air,

unspoken yet completely lethal.

Daniel knelt down on the carpet,

his fingers scraping against the rug as he picked up the gold pen.

He placed the documents against his knee,

his signature jagged and uneven as he signed every page.

When he finished,

he threw the pen across the room,

burying his face in his hands as quiet sobs wracked his body.

I stepped forward,

picked up the signed documents,

and slipped them neatly back into my bag.

"Thank you,

Daniel,"

I said calmly.

"Have a good night."

I walked out of the room alongside Margaret and Robert,

May you like

leaving Daniel alone in the dark,

surrounded by the broken glass of Vanessa's drink and the ruins of his arrogant ambition.
