Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Mastermind

The tension in the ballroom had reached a boiling point,

though the wealthy guests were still oblivious,

laughing and sipping expensive wine.

Daniel’s hand trembled as he let go of my arm,

his eyes panicked as he scanned the crowd.

"You're bluffing,"

he whispered,

trying to regain his composure.

"You wouldn't ruin the family name."

"Watch me,"

I said,

repeating the exact words Margaret had spoken to me at the mall.

I walked away from him,

heading straight toward the VIP lounge at the back of the hall.

Daniel scrambled after me,

his heavy footsteps echoing behind me over the classical music.

"Emily,

stop!"

he called out,

trying to keep his voice down.

I pushed open the double doors of the private room.

Inside,

Vanessa was pacing back and forth across the thick red carpet,

holding a crystal glass of gin.

She turned sharply when the door opened,

expecting Daniel,

but her face fell when she saw me step into the room.

"What is she doing here?"

Vanessa demanded,

looking past me at Daniel,

who rushed in right behind me.

"She knows,"

Daniel said,

his voice cracking with desperation.

"Vanessa,

she knows about the press!"

Vanessa’s posture changed instantly,

a bitter,

triumphant smirk spreading across her red lips.

"So what if she knows?"

Vanessa sneered,

taking a slow sip of her drink.

"Let her tell them."

"The publicity will ruin your father’s stock prices,"

she continued,

stepping closer to Daniel.

"And when the stock plummets,

my investors will buy up the controlling shares."

I froze.

The pieces of the puzzle suddenly clicked together into a terrifying picture.

This was never just an affair.

This was never just about a lonely woman and a cheating husband.

"You're working for the rival firm,"

I said,

my voice steady despite the shock running through my veins.

Vanessa laughed,

a cold,

metallic sound.

"Did you really think I fell in love with your pathetic husband,

Emily?"

"He’s weak,

gullible,

and desperate to prove himself to his daddy."

"He made it so easy,"

she added,

glancing at Daniel with absolute disdain.

"All I had to do was hold his hand,

compliment his ego,

and he handed over the corporate access codes."

Daniel stood frozen,

his eyes wide with horror as he stared at the woman he had risked everything for.

"Vanessa..."

he stammered,

his voice barely a whisper.

"You... you lied to me?"

"Of course I lied to you,

you idiot!"

she snapped.

"You gave me everything I needed to bring down Bennett Enterprises!"

"Not quite everything,"

a cold voice announced from the doorway.

We all turned.

Margaret stood at the entrance,

flanked by two uniformed police officers and the head of corporate security.

"Miss Reed,"

Margaret said,

her voice ringing out with terrifying authority.

"You are under arrest for corporate espionage,

wire fraud,

and grand larceny."

Vanessa’s glass slipped from her hand,

shattering against the floor,

gin splashing across her expensive shoes.

"What?"

she gasped,

backing away.

"You can't prove anything!"

"We don't need to,"

I said,

holding up my phone,

which had been recording every word spoken in the room.

"You just confessed on tape."

The officers stepped forward,

grabbing Vanessa’s arms and pulling them behind her back,

snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

"Daniel,

do something!"

she screamed as she was pulled toward the exit.

"Help me!"

Daniel didn't move.

He looked utterly broken,

his entire world crumbling around him in a matter of seconds.

When the security team led Vanessa away,

the room fell completely silent.

Daniel turned slowly to look at his mother,

and then at me.

"Emily..."

he begged,

tears welling in his eyes.

"I didn't know."

"I swear to God,

I didn't know what she was doing!"

"I was stupid,

I was foolish,

but I love you!"

"Please,

forgive me!"

I looked at the man I had once loved,

the man I had promised to honor and cherish,

and felt absolutely nothing.

I reached into my purse,

pulled out a thick white envelope,

and held it out to him.

"What’s this?"

he asked,

his voice shaking.

"Divorce papers,"

I answered softly.

"Sign them,

Daniel."

"Or the press gets the full recording of what just happened in this room."

Margaret walked up beside me,

placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

She looked at her son with a cold,

unforgiving gaze.

"Sign them,

son,"

Margaret said quietly.

"It’s the only honorable thing you have left to do."

Daniel took the envelope with trembling hands,

sinking into a nearby armchair as the weight of his defeat crushed him.

I turned my back on him,

walking out of the VIP room and back into the brightly lit gala,
