Chapter 10 - Snowfall Over Michigan Avenue

Thirty days later,

the winter snow was falling heavily over the streets of Chicago,

covering the city in a blanket of clean,

pure white.

I stood inside my brand-new luxury penthouse apartment overlooking Lake Michigan,

holding a glass of sparkling red wine.

The space was light,

modern,

and entirely mine—decorated exactly the way I wanted,

without any input from Daniel or his family.

My phone chimed on the granite kitchen counter.

I picked it up and saw a notification from my legal team.

The divorce decree had been officially signed by the judge.

I was no longer Emily Bennett.

I was Emily Vance once again,

reclaiming my maiden name and my complete independence.

A knock sounded at the front door.

I opened it to find Margaret standing in the hallway,

wearing an exquisite mink coat and holding a bottle of vintage champagne.

"May I come in?"

she asked with a warm smile.

"Always,

Margaret,"

I said,

stepping aside to let her enter.

She walked through the spacious living room,

admiring the view of the frozen lake through the massive glass windows.

"It looks beautiful in here,"

Margaret remarked,

setting the champagne bottle on the counter.

"How is work?"

"Exhausting,"

I smiled,

pouring her a glass of wine.

"We’re restructuring the entire financial division after Marcus’s departure,"

"but the board is fully behind my new strategic plan."

"I never doubted you for a second,"

Margaret said,

clinking her glass against mine.

"And how is Daniel?"

I asked,

curious despite myself.

Margaret took a slow sip before answering.

"He is living in a small two-bedroom apartment in Indianapolis,"

she revealed.

"Working twelve-hour shifts at the distribution warehouse."

"Is he bitter?"

"He is humbled,"

Margaret corrected.

"He asked about you yesterday."

"He wanted to know if you were happy."

"And what did you tell him?"

Margaret looked at me,

her eyes shining with pride and deep affection.

"I told him that you were thriving,"

"and that he should never make the mistake of looking back."

We stood together by the window,

watching the snow fall gently over the grand city below.

I had lost a marriage built on lies,

but I had gained my freedom,

my dignity,

and a future brighter than anything I had ever imagined.

The pain of that cold Christmas shopping trip in the mall was completely gone,

replaced by the cold,
