Chapter 11 - The Echoes of a Conspiratorial Past

The snow had finally melted,

giving way to the chilly,

damp breeze of early Chicago spring.

I sat inside my spacious office on the forty-fifth floor,

watching the morning sun reflect off the steel glass skyscrapers.

My new desk was clutter-free,

adorned only with a sleek laptop,

a brass nameplate reading Emily Vance,

and a framed photograph of Margaret and me at the gala.

As Vice President of Corporate Strategy,

my days were filled with endless meetings,

restructuring plans,

and high-stakes investment evaluations.

Yet,

the ghost of Marcus Croft’s treason still hung over the building.

A soft chime sounded on my desk phone,

and my assistant's voice came through the speaker.

"Miss Vance,"

she said politely,

"there is an urgent encrypted message for you from the federal prosecutor’s office."

I pressed the receiver to my ear,

my chest tightening with anticipation.

"This is Emily,"

I answered firmly.

"Miss Vance,"

the prosecutor’s voice sounded grim,

"we found a secondary server during the seizure of Marcus Croft’s assets."

"Did it contain additional financial records?"

I asked.

"It contained communication logs,"

he revealed,

"showing that Croft was not working alone."

"He was funded by Julian Cross,"

"the managing partner of Apex Capital Holdings."

I felt a cold shiver run down my spine.

Julian Cross was one of the most ruthless hedge fund managers in the country,

a billionaire notorious for dismantling legacy corporations.

"And there is one more thing,"

the prosecutor added,

May you like

pausing for dramatic effect.

"Julian Cross has just requested an emergency meeting with the board of Bennett Enterprises."
