Chapter 2 - The Audacity of the Intruder

The dining room table was set with fine china and polished silverware,

reflecting the dim light of the chandelier.

Robert Bennett sat at the head of the table,

reading the morning newspaper with a grim expression,

while Margaret poured orange juice into crystal glasses.

Daniel sat across from me,

shifting uncomfortably in his seat,

his phone buzzing repeatedly against the mahogany table.

Every time the screen lit up,

the name Vanessa flashed across it.

"Turn that off,"

Robert commanded without looking up from his paper.

Daniel quickly flipped the phone face down,

clearing his throat.

"Father,

I really think we’re blowing this out of proportion,"

Daniel insisted,

leaning forward.

"Vanessa is an old acquaintance,

she was in crisis,

and I was simply being supportive."

"Holding hands in the middle of Water Tower Place?"

I asked quietly,

setting my glass down.

"Is that standard procedure for supporting old acquaintances,

Daniel?"

Daniel’s jaw tightened,

his eyes darting to his mother for help.

"Emily,

you’re exaggerating,"

he said,

his voice dropping into that familiar patronizing tone.

"She was emotional,

she lost her balance,

I was holding her steady."

"And the hotel in Boston?"

I asked,

my voice smooth and entirely devoid of emotion.

The room went dead silent.

Robert slowly lowered his newspaper,

his eyes fixing on his son.

Daniel turned pale,

his lips parting slightly as he struggled to process my words.

"What hotel?"

Daniel stammered,

sweat glistening on his forehead.

"The boutique hotel downtown,"

I said,

taking a small sip of coffee.

"The one where you stayed three weeks ago when you told me you were at a regional conference."

"I... I was at a conference,"

he stuttered.

"With Vanessa?"

I pressed,

placing my hands flat on the table.

"Because according to the room charge,

she ordered room service under your name."

"That’s impossible,"

Daniel snapped,

his composure fracturing.

"You’ve been going through my private records?"

"I am your wife,

Daniel,"

I reminded him gently.

"Our records are joint."

Before Daniel could launch into another defensive tirade,

the front doorbell rang.

The sharp chime reverberated through the grand hallway,

shattering the silence of the room.

Margaret stood up gracefully,

smoothing her skirt.

"That will be our guest,"

she said calmly.

Daniel froze.

"What guest?"

Margaret didn't answer.

She walked out into the foyer,

her heels clicking against the marble tile.

A few moments later,

she returned,

guiding a woman into the dining room.

It was Vanessa Reed.

She was dressed in a sleek cream coat,

her blonde hair perfectly styled,

carrying a designer handbag that cost more than my monthly salary.

She stopped when she saw the entire family sitting at the table,

her eyes widening in momentary shock.

"Daniel?"

she gasped softly,

her voice trembling with calculated vulnerability.

"What is this?"

Daniel stood up so fast his chair screeched against the floor.

"Mom,

what did you do?"

"I invited Miss Reed for breakfast,"

Margaret said,

gesturing toward an empty chair at the end of the table.

"Since she requires so much of my son’s time and financial support,

I felt it was only proper that we get to know her better."

Vanessa looked between Daniel and Robert,

her polished facade beginning to crack.

"Mrs. Bennett,

I think there’s been a misunderstanding—"

"Nonsense,"

Margaret interrupted,

taking her seat.

"Please,

sit down,

Vanessa."

"Is it true you took fifty thousand dollars from my company’s account?"

Robert asked suddenly,

his voice booming like thunder in the enclosed room.

Vanessa took a step back,

clutching her handbag tight against her chest.

"I... I don't know what you’re talking about."

"Daniel gave it to you,"

I said softly,

looking straight at her.

"Didn’t he?"

Vanessa turned her gaze to me,

her cold eyes locking onto mine,

dropping the helpless routine completely.

"He gave it to me because I deserved it,"

she sneered,

stepping closer to the table.

"He promised me a future,

Emily."

"Did he now?"

I replied,

May you like

feeling a wave of cold satisfaction wash over me.

"And did he promise you his debts as well?"
