Chapter 9 - The Intrusion at Night

Night fell over the city,

bringing with it a heavy,

blinding fog that rolled off the Detroit river,

shrouding the tall skyscrapers in thick white shadows.

Inside the high-rise penthouse,

all was quiet and peaceful.

Sarah was sound asleep in her master bedroom,

exhausted from a long day of taking care of baby Noah.

In her own room,

Emily lay awake in her soft plush bed,

staring up at the decorative glow-in-the-dark stars Lorenzo’s men had installed on her ceiling.

Despite the warmth of the room,

she felt an uneasy restlessness in her chest.

At two in the morning,

a faint sound echoed from the kitchen—a soft,

barely audible click followed by the quiet rustle of footfalls on marble.

Emily sat up instantly,

her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She knew the penthouse guards were supposed to be stationed in the main hallway outside,

but the quietness inside the apartment felt unnatural.

Sliding out of bed,

her bare feet touching the hardwood floor,

Emily crept toward her bedroom door,

opening it just a fraction of an inch to peer out into the dark hallway.

Through the dim light of the living room,

she saw two tall figures dressed in dark tactical gear moving silently toward her mother’s bedroom.

They carried suppressed sidearms and heavy zip-ties.

One of them held a device that had successfully jammed the electronic lock on the private elevator entrance.

Emily’s breath hitched in her throat.

Her first instinct was to scream,

but she remembered Lorenzo's words during his last visit:

"If you ever feel unsafe,"

"there is a red button hidden beneath the kitchen island counter."

"Press it once,"

"and my men will arrive in seconds."

Knowing she couldn't reach her mother's room without being seen,

Emily dropped to her hands and knees.

She crawled silently across the carpeted hallway,

using the shadow of the large sofa to shield herself from the intruders' sightlines.

Her hands trembled violently as she reached the base of the kitchen island.

One of the intruders stepped into the kitchen area,

his heavy boots clicking softly against the floor.

"Search the kid's room first,"

the intruder whispered in a raspy,

foreign accent.

"Victor wants the girl alive."

"The mother doesn't matter."

Emily squeezed her eyes shut in terror,

her small hand reaching frantically beneath the lip of the quartz countertop.

Her fingers brushed against a hard,

metallic box,

and she slammed her thumb down on the smooth rubber button concealed underneath.

Instantly,

an invisible silent alarm transmitted a high-frequency distress signal directly to Dante’s phone and the central Moretti security hub.

Before the intruder could turn the corner toward Emily’s hiding spot,

the reinforced heavy glass of the penthouse balcony shattered with a deafening crash!

Two elite Moretti enforcers breached through the window on tactical ropes,

their weapons firing with precise,

devastating efficiency before the intruders could even raise their weapons.

The sound of muffled gunfire and heavy impacts echoed through the luxurious living room as the two contractors were brought down in seconds.

Sarah rushed out of her bedroom screaming,

clutching Noah tightly against her chest,

only to find the room filled with smoke and tactical guards securing the perimeter.

Emily sat on the floor beneath the counter,

shaking uncontrollably,

tears streaming down her face as the adrenaline washed through her small frame.

Within three minutes,

the private elevator doors hissed open,

and Lorenzo Moretti stepped into the room,

his long coat flying behind him like a dark cloak of retribution.

He bypassed his guards,

bypassed the fallen intruders,

and went straight to the kitchen island,

dropping to one knee beside Emily.

"Emily,"

Lorenzo said,

his voice raw with a rare,

unfiltered panic that he had never shown to any human being before.

"Are you hurt?"

Emily looked up at him,

her small body shivering,

and without thinking,

she threw her arms around the mafia boss’s neck,

sobbing into his shoulder.

"I... I pressed the button,"

she sobbed quietly.

"I remembered what you told me."

Lorenzo wrapped his heavy,

protective arms around her,

holding her tightly against his chest,

his eyes burning with a terrifying,

apocalyptic fury as he looked over her shoulder at Dante.

"Dante,"

Lorenzo ordered,

his voice dropping to a whisper that sounded like death itself.

"Bring me Victor Vane."

"Tonight."
