Chapter 8 - A New Life and An Unseen Threat

Two weeks passed,

and the icy grip of winter slowly began to ease over Detroit,

though snow still clung to the edges of the manicured lawns in the wealthy suburban districts.

For Emily,

life had transformed into something resembling a fairytale,

yet she could never fully shake the lingering anxiety that had been carved into her soul during her early childhood.

Every morning,

a sleek silver sedan driven by Marco,

one of Lorenzo’s most trusted personal bodyguards,

picked Emily up from the penthouse entrance and drove her to St. Jude’s Private Academy.

The school was a stunning granite building surrounded by tall oak trees,

where children of politicians,

CEOs,

and diplomats studied in quiet security.

Emily wore a neat navy blue uniform,

her hair braided cleanly,

carrying a heavy backpack full of brand-new textbooks and art supplies.

Yet,

despite the warm classrooms and soft leather chairs,

she felt out of place among classmates who talked casually about vacations in France and expensive gadgets.

She rarely spoke about her past,

keeping her quiet focus entirely on her studies,

determined to make her mother and Lorenzo proud.

One afternoon,

as the bell rang signaling the end of the school day,

Emily walked out through the heavy iron gates toward Marco's parked sedan.

As she stepped onto the sidewalk,

she noticed a dark,

unmarked SUV sitting quietly across the street with tinted windows.

The engine was idling,

and as Emily made eye contact with the side mirror,

the vehicle slowly pulled away into traffic without turning on its headlights.

Emily’s stomach tightened with a familiar,

uncomfortable sensation.

She got into the back seat of Marco's sedan,

looking back through the rear window.

"Marco?"

she asked softly,

her voice trembling slightly.

"Did you see that black truck across the street?"

Marco,

a broad-shouldered man with a scar across his left eyebrow and sharp,

vigilant eyes,

glanced at her through the rearview mirror.

"I saw it,

little miss,"

Marco replied calmly,

pulling the car smoothly into the flow of traffic.

"Don't you worry about a thing."

"Dante and Mr. Moretti have eyes on every street in this district."

"Nobody gets close to you without us knowing."

Meanwhile,

at the Moretti headquarters in downtown Detroit,

Dante stood in front of Lorenzo's massive oak desk,

laying down a series of surveillance photographs.

The photos showed Victor Vane meeting secretly in an abandoned warehouse with several masked men affiliated with rogue mercs from out of state.

"Victor isn't letting this go,

Boss,"

Dante reported,

his voice filled with dark frustration.

"He knows he can't fight us directly on the streets,"

"so he's attempting to hire outside contractors."

"Our informants indicate he plans to target the girl or her mother to force you into a public compromise."

"He thinks if he can kidnap Emily,"

"he can demand control over the northern shipping docks in exchange for her safe return."

Lorenzo picked up one of the photographs,

staring at Victor Vane's greasy face.

His expression was completely devoid of emotion,

a stillness that Dante knew was far more dangerous than explosive rage.

"He believes she is my weakness,"

Lorenzo murmured softly,

his thumb tracing the edge of the photograph.

"He thinks that because I showed mercy to a child,"

"I have grown soft."

Lorenzo looked up at Dante,

his dark eyes gleaming with an absolute,

deadly resolve.

"Set the trap,

Dante,"

Lorenzo ordered.

"Let Victor believe his contractors have found a blind spot in our security."

"Let him think he can reach her."

"And when he takes the bait,"

"we will erase his name from Detroit forever."
