Chapter 14 - The Trap on the Detroit River

Thursday night arrived with a violent,
raging blizzard that swept across the Great Lakes,
battering Detroit with howling winds,
blinding snow,
and freezing temperatures.
The Detroit River churned with dark,
icy waves that slammed relentlessly against the wooden pilings of Pier 42.
The industrial port was eerie and silent,
its massive metal cranes towering into the storm like frozen giants.
At precisely eleven-thirty,
Nico walked out of the Pier 42 main security office,
wrapping his heavy coat tightly around his neck.
He motioned to the four Moretti guards standing by the main iron gate.
"Hey,"
Nico called out over the howling wind.
"There's fresh coffee and hot food waiting down at the south cafeteria."
"Go grab a break,"
"I'll watch the gates for twenty minutes."
The guards looked surprised,
but given Nico's senior caporegime rank,
they nodded respectfully and walked off into the darkness toward the south complex.
As soon as they disappeared,
Nico pulled out a small electronic keyfob and hit the unlock button.
The heavy iron gates slid open silently,
allowing three dark,
unmarked delivery vans to glide quietly into the shipping yard,
their tires crunching softly against the fresh snow.
The vans stopped near Freight Terminal B,
where a massive cargo container holding Lorenzo’s fifty-million-dollar pharmaceutical machinery sat waiting for morning customs inspection.
The doors of the vans opened,
and fifteen heavily armed mercenaries clad in dark tactical gear stepped out,
led personally by Antonio Falcone.
Antonio pulled down his face mask,
grinning triumphantly as he looked up at the massive container.
"Excellent work,
Nico,"
Antonio praised,
patting Nico’s shoulder.
"Our men will plant twenty crates of unregistered automatic rifles inside this container now."
"In two hours,"
"federal agents will receive an anonymous tip,"
"and Lorenzo Moretti will spend the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary."
Nico nodded nervously,
his eyes constantly scanning the dark,
shadowy corners of the shipping yard.
"Just do it fast,
Antonio,"
Nico urged,
his breath puffing into thick white clouds.
"Something feels wrong out here."
"The air is too quiet."
Suddenly,
massive,
blinding floodlights erupted from every angle of the shipping yard!
Bright,
searing white light illuminated the entire pier,
blinding Antonio,
Nico,
and the fifteen mercenaries completely.
The deafening sound of heavy diesel engines roared through the storm as six massive steel-plated Moretti haulers smashed through the outer perimeters,
boxing the three vans in from every possible escape route.
Over fifty armed Moretti enforcers stepped out from behind the shipping containers,
their laser sights painting dozens of red dots directly onto the chests of Antonio's mercenaries.
"Drop your weapons!"
Dante's voice boomed through a heavy tactical loudspeaker,
echoing like thunder across the freezing river.
"You are surrounded,"
"disarmed,"
"and outmatched!"
Antonio Falcone stumbled back in sheer terror,
his heart dropping into his stomach as his mercenaries instinctively threw their weapons onto the snow,
raising their hands in absolute surrender.
Nico turned pale as a corpse,
falling to his knees in the cold snow,
knowing his life was completely over.
From the shadow of Freight Terminal B,
a tall figure walked slowly into the bright floodlights.
Lorenzo Moretti walked unhurriedly,
wearing his heavy dark coat,
a sleek black umbrella held above his head,
shielding him from the falling snow.
He stopped ten feet in front of Antonio Falcone,
looking down at him with a quiet,
terrifying tranquility.
"You fell for it again,
Antonio,"
Lorenzo whispered,
his voice cutting clearly through the howling wind.
"You thought greed could buy you a kingdom."
"Lorenzo!"
Nico sobbed from the ground,
crawling toward Lorenzo's boots.
"Please!
I made a mistake!"
"They offered me money!
I was weak!"
"Forgive me,
Boss!
Fifteen years of service!"
Lorenzo didn't even look down at Nico.
He simply gestured slightly to Dante.
"Take Nico away,"
Lorenzo ordered calmly.
"Strip him of his name,"
"his rank,"
"and his properties."
"He will spend the rest of his days far away from Detroit,"
"remembering what happens to traitors who break their oath."
Dante grabbed Nico by his collar,
dragging the weeping man away into the darkness.
Lorenzo then stepped closer to Antonio Falcone,
who was shaking uncontrollably,
held firmly by two broad-shouldered Moretti enforcers.
"Your father sent you to do a man's job,
Antonio,"
Lorenzo said softly,
reaching out to gently pat Antonio’s trembling cheek.
"And once again,"
"you proved to be nothing more than a foolish child."
"Please..."
Antonio choked out,
tears streaming down his face.
"Don't kill me..."
"My father will give you whatever you want!"
Lorenzo smiled faintly,
a cold,
merciless expression that promised total destruction.
"I don't want your father's money,
Antonio,"
Lorenzo whispered into his ear.
"I want his empire."

"And tonight,"
"the Falcone dynasty dies."
