Chapter 7 - Shadows at the Syndicate Table

Deep within the industrial heart of Detroit,

inside a dimly lit underground conference room built beneath an old glass factory,

the air was thick with the bitter smell of cigar smoke and unspoken threat.

At the center of a massive mahogany table sat the six most powerful syndicate leaders of the city,

men who controlled the underground commerce,

the docks,

the shipping yards,

and the political favors across the state.

At the head of the table sat Don Silvio Falcone,

an aging mafia chieftain with silver hair,

cold blue eyes,

and a reputation for merciless cruelty.

Beside him stood Victor Vane,

sweating profusely,

his hands shaking slightly as he constantly adjusted his leather jacket.

The heavy iron doors at the end of the hall swung open with a loud thud,

and Lorenzo Moretti walked into the room,

flanked by Dante and six heavily armed enforcers clad in tailored black coats.

The room grew instantly silent.

Every boss present turned their eyes toward Lorenzo,

feeling the overwhelming aura of authority that moved with him like an invisible storm.

"You kept us waiting last night,

Lorenzo,"

Don Silvio spoke,

his raspy voice echoing off the stone walls.

"In our line of work,"

"tardiness is often interpreted as disrespect."

Lorenzo did not apologize.

He walked calmly to his assigned seat at the opposite end of the long table,

pulled out the heavy chair,

and sat down,

crossing his long legs comfortably.

"I had a pressing matter that required my personal attention,

Silvio,"

Lorenzo replied smoothly,

his dark eyes locking onto the older boss with calm dominance.

"And my personal matters take precedence over routine meetings."

Victor Vane leaned forward,

unable to suppress his anger any longer,

his voice rising in a desperate tone.

"A pressing matter?!"

Victor spat,

slamming his hand on the table.

"You sent your chief enforcer to beat up my men on Elm Street!"

"You stole three thousand dollars in interest owed to my family,"

"and you threatened to destroy my entire operation over a worthless maid and her two bratty kids!"

"Is that what you call a pressing matter,

Moretti?"

The other bosses around the table exchanged quiet,

surprised looks.

It was unheard of for a man of Lorenzo's stature to personally intervene in a petty street debt handled by low-level loan sharks.

Don Silvio leaned back,

his sharp eyes narrowing as he scrutinized Lorenzo's unbothered expression.

"Is this true,

Lorenzo?"

Silvio asked softly,

danger lurking beneath his calm exterior.

"Did you break syndicate code by interfering in Victor's collection territory for a family of nobodies?"

Lorenzo slowly leaned forward,

placing his elbows on the wooden table,

his fingers intertwined.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop by ten degrees as his dark gaze locked onto Victor Vane.

"Victor Vane's men put their hands on a woman in my city,"

Lorenzo stated,

his voice low,

steady,

and chillingly clear.

"They threatened an innocent twelve-year-old girl,"

"and they starved an infant in a cold room while collecting eighty percent predatory interest."

"If Victor wishes to discuss syndicate codes,"

"let us discuss the code that explicitly forbids dishonorable violence against helpless women and children."

"That family is now directly under my personal protection,"

Lorenzo declared,

his words striking the room like a heavy iron hammer.

"Any man who looks at them,"

"any man who steps near their home,"

"or any man who speaks their name with intent to harm,"

"will be treated as an enemy of the Moretti family."

Victor stood up,

his face turning red with rage.

"You can't do this!"

"This is a violation of territory rights!"

"Silvio,"

"tell him he can't do this!"

Don Silvio raised a single finger,

silencing Victor instantly.

Silvio stared at Lorenzo for a long,

uncomfortable moment,

trying to read the motives behind Lorenzo's fierce protectiveness.

He smelled a weakness,

a potential vulnerability that the formidable Lorenzo Moretti had never displayed before.

"The Moretti family is free to extend its protection to whomever it chooses,"

Silvio said slowly,

a cruel smile creeping across his wrinkled face.

"However,"

"be careful,

Lorenzo."

"When a king builds a golden cage to protect a fragile bird,"

"the whole city learns where his heart is hidden."

Lorenzo stood up calmly,

adjusting his suit coat,

unmoved by Silvio's subtle threat.

"My heart is not hidden,

Silvio,"

Lorenzo whispered,

looking down at the older boss.

"It is shielded by five hundred armed men."

May you like

"Try to touch it,"

"and see what remains of your empire."
