Chapter 16 - The Years of Gold and Iron

Five years passed over the city of Detroit,

transforming the winter-chilled streets into a bustling metropolis of order,

unprecedented prosperity,

and absolute quiet.

Under Lorenzo Moretti’s supreme rule,

crime was strictly regulated,

predatory loan sharks were eradicated,

and the local neighborhoods flourished under the silent protection of the Moretti empire.

Emily Carter was now seventeen years old,

growing into a striking young woman with sharp,

intelligent eyes,

an elegant demeanor,

and a keen tactical mind that mirrored Lorenzo’s own.

She was the top student at St. Jude’s Private Academy,

fluent in three languages,

and secretly studying corporate strategy and international law under Lorenzo’s private tutors.

Her mother,

Sarah,

managed the Carter Foundation,

a multi-million-dollar charitable enterprise that funded orphanages,

hospitals,

and housing for struggling mothers across the state.

Six-year-old Noah was now a bright,

energetic boy who ran through the wide halls of their private estate,

completely shielded from the dark world that made his safety possible.

Yet,

despite the peaceful years,

Lorenzo never allowed his guards to drop their vigilance.

He knew that peace in the underground world was merely a temporary truce between hungry wolves.

One rainy autumn afternoon,

inside the grand glass office atop the Moretti Tower,

Lorenzo stood by the window,

watching thick storm clouds roll across Lake Michigan.

Behind him,

Dante stepped into the room,

his expression unusually grave as he laid a thick,

black folder onto the glass table.

"The peace is breaking,

Boss,"

Dante reported softly,

his deep voice filled with grim tension.

"Don Marcello Rossi of the Chicago Syndicate has officially united the midwestern families."

"With the Falcone family gone,"

"Rossi believes Detroit’s northern trade routes are ripe for seizure."

Lorenzo did not turn around immediately.

He took a quiet breath,

his reflection in the rain-streaked window showing eyes that remained as sharp and terrifying as ever.

"Marcello Rossi is an ambitious man,"

Lorenzo murmured,

his tone cold and measured.

"He thinks distance makes him safe,"

"and he mistakes my five years of silence for complacency."

"He isn't just targeting the shipping lines,

Boss,"

Dante added,

his jaw tightening.

"Our intelligence shows Rossi has hired elite European mercenaries."

"They have been gathering surveillance data on Miss Emily's upcoming high school graduation gala."

"They plan to strike where they believe you are most vulnerable."

Before Lorenzo could respond,

the heavy mahogany doors of the office opened,

and Emily walked in,

carrying a leather satchel filled with legal briefs.

She wore a tailored charcoal blazer over a crisp white shirt,

her long dark hair pinned back neatly.

She didn't look like a helpless girl anymore;

she looked like royalty entering her own court.

"I heard Dante’s report from the hallway,

Lorenzo,"

Emily said calmly,

walking straight to the table and opening her satchel.

"If Don Rossi thinks I am your vulnerability,"

"he is making the exact same mistake Victor Vane and Antonio Falcone made five years ago."

Lorenzo turned around,

a faint,

proud smile touching the corner of his lips as he looked at her.

"This is not a street loan shark,

Emily,"

Lorenzo warned gently.

"Marcello Rossi commands two thousand armed men and controls half of Chicago."

Emily looked straight into Lorenzo’s dark eyes,

her voice steady,

unwavering,

and fierce with loyalty.

"You taught me how to read human nature,

Lorenzo,"

she replied softly.

"You taught me that a king who defends his family with blood can never be defeated by a tyrant who fights for greed."

May you like

"Let Rossi come to Detroit."

"We will show him who truly owns this city."
