Chapter 3 - Warmth in the Cold

Emily stood frozen for two long seconds before slowly reaching up to slide the chain from its track.

The front door swung open completely,

allowing the icy wind to rush into the small hallway,

followed immediately by the towering figure of Lorenzo Moretti.

As Lorenzo stepped across the threshold,

his sharp eyes immediately registered every detail of the house.

He saw the peeling wallpaper,

the faint water stains on the ceiling,

the absence of any heating vents blowing warm air,

and the single flickering light bulb dangling in the kitchen.

He felt the bitter chill in the room,

a cold that bit straight into the bone.

Without saying a word,

he motioned to his men.

"Dante,"

"get the heaters from the second truck,"

Lorenzo commanded calmly.

"Set them up in the living room and the bedrooms immediately."

"Yes,

Boss,"

Dante replied,

turning instantly to execute the order.

Lorenzo walked slowly into the small kitchen,

his leather shoes clicking against the cracked linoleum floor.

He set a large,

warm bag on the table.

Emily followed him tentatively,

holding Noah close against her chest as if using the baby as a shield.

"You don't have to be afraid,"

Lorenzo said,

turning around and looking at her.

"Sit down."

Emily sat cautiously on one of the wooden chairs,

watching every movement he made.

Lorenzo unzipped the insulated bag and pulled out several cans of premium infant formula,

bottles of pre-warmed organic milk,

fresh baby cereal,

and containers of hot,

steaming soup for Emily.

He picked up a bottle of warm milk,

checked the temperature against his wrist with natural precision,

and handed it to Emily.

"Feed him,"

he said gently.

Emily didn't hesitate any longer.

Her hands shook as she guided the bottle to Noah’s mouth.

The baby instantly latched onto it,

his tiny hands clutching the bottle desperately as he began to drink with eager,

greedy gulps.

A soft sigh of absolute relief escaped the baby’s lips,

and within seconds,

his tense little body relaxed completely in Emily’s arms.

Seeing her brother finally eating,

the tears Emily had been holding back all day spilled over her lashes.

She bowed her head over Noah,

her shoulders shaking silently as she wept from overwhelming relief.

Lorenzo watched her quietly.

He reached into his pocket,

pulled out a clean silk handkerchief,

and held it out to her.

"You did good,"

Emily,"

he said,

his voice unusually gentle for a man who ordered executions without blinking.

"You protected your brother."

"You asked for twenty dollars,"

"but you brought an army to your door instead."

Emily took the handkerchief,

wiping her eyes as she looked up at the intimidating stranger.

"Why are you doing this?"

she asked softly.

"You don't even know us."

"Twenty dollars is nothing to you,"

"but this... this is too much."

Lorenzo looked around the meager room,

his gaze lingering on the empty refrigerator that stood open in the corner.

"A long time ago,"

Lorenzo murmured,

his voice dropping into a low,

reflective tone,

"I was twelve years old,"

"standing in a cold room,"

"watching someone I loved go hungry."

"Nobody came to help me that night."

He looked back into Emily’s eyes,

his gaze firm and resolute.

"I swore that if I ever had the power to stop a child from feeling that way,"

"I would use it."

"Tonight,"

May you like

"your text didn't land on my phone by accident."

"It landed there because you were meant to find me."
