Chapter 18 - The Mind of an Heir

Inside the dark,
soundproof interrogation suite beneath the Moretti estate,
Julian Vance sat tied to a heavy steel chair,
sweating profusely under the glare of a single overhead spotlight.
Standing in the shadows was Lorenzo Moretti,
flanked by Dante and Emily.
Sarah had stayed upstairs with young Noah,
kept far away from the dark realities of the underground war,
but Emily had chosen to stand beside Lorenzo.
She refused to be protected blindly;
she wanted to see every piece on the board.
Julian was weeping,
his arrogant facade completely shattered.
"I... I didn't want to do it!"
Julian sobbed,
looking at Lorenzo’s imposing,
terrifying figure.
"Rossi threatened my family!"
"He said if I didn't get close to the girl and plant a tracking beacon on her car,"
"he would kill my father!"
Lorenzo didn't speak.
He stood motionless,
his presence alone filling the room with an overwhelming weight of dread.
He looked over at Emily,
curious to see how she would handle the situation.
Emily walked slowly into the circle of light,
standing two feet in front of the captured spy.
"Where is Rossi’s main strike team positioned,
Julian?"
Emily asked,
her tone calm,
analytical,
and utterly devoid of pity.
"They... they are arriving tomorrow night by private yacht at the old marina!"
Julian squeaked frantically.
"Fifty men!"
"They plan to launch an armed assault on the Carter Hospital dedication gala on Saturday!"
"They think Lorenzo will be distracted by the public event!"
Dante looked over at Lorenzo,
his sharp eyes gleaming.
"We can ambush their yacht at the marina before they even touch the dock,
Boss."
Lorenzo was about to nod,
but Emily raised her hand gently,
stopping the order.
"No,"
Emily stated firmly,
turning her head to look at Lorenzo and Dante.
"If we destroy them at the marina,"
"Rossi stays safe in Chicago,"
"and he will simply hire another strike team next month."
"He will keep coming until he feels total defeat."
Lorenzo’s dark eyes narrowed with intense interest.
"What do you propose,
Emily?"
he asked smoothly.
Emily stepped closer to the strategic map hanging on the wall,
her thumb tracing the layout of the riverfront district.
"Let Rossi’s men land at the marina,"
she explained,
her voice ringing with brilliant tactical authority.
"Let them believe Julian’s tracking beacon is functioning."
"We lead them directly into the abandoned steel refinery on the north bank,"
"far away from the hospital and civilians."
"We leak false security routes through Julian's phone tonight."
"When Rossi's fifty elite mercenaries enter the refinery thinking they are ambushing us,"
"we seal the perimeter,"
"cut off their escape across the river,"
"and capture Rossi's chief commander alive."
"Then,"
Emily concluded,
her eyes shining with lethal resolve,
"we send that commander back to Chicago with a message that will end Rossi's ambition forever."
Dante stared at the seventeen-year-old girl in absolute astonishment,
a slow,
profound smile of respect spreading across his weathered face.
Lorenzo looked at Emily for a long moment,
feeling a surge of immense pride deep within his chest.
She was no longer just the helpless child who had sent an accidental text for twenty dollars.
She had become the mind,
the heart,
and the true future heir of the Moretti dynasty.
"Prepare the refinery,"
Lorenzo ordered Dante,
May you like
his deep voice echoing like a battle command.
"We execute Emily’s plan."
