Chapter 13 - The Poison in the Ranks

The humiliating defeat at the Detroit Opera House echoed through the underground corridors of the syndicate like a violent earthquake.
Don Silvio Falcone was furious,
his pride deeply wounded,
his political influence crippled,
and his son disgraced in front of every major family in the state.
Inside the private sanctuary of the Falcone estate,
Don Silvio sat in dark solitude,
plotting his next move with quiet,
desperate malice.
He realized now that legal maneuvers and public humiliation would never defeat Lorenzo Moretti.
To destroy a kingdom,
one had to poison it from within.
Three days after the gala,
in a dark,
secluded alley behind a industrial shipping wharf near the Detroit river,
a sleek black sedan sat idling with its lights turned off.
Inside the vehicle sat Nico,
one of Lorenzo Moretti’s high-ranking caporegimes who commanded the lucrative northern commercial docks.
Nico was a rough,
scarred man in his late fortnight fifties,
a veteran of street wars who had served the Moretti family for fifteen years.
However,
resentment had been festering deep inside Nico’s heart for months.
He believed Lorenzo was spending far too much time,
money,
and security resources protecting a useless maid and her children,
neglecting the old loyal soldiers who bled for the family empire.
The rear door of Nico's car opened quietly,
and Antonio Falcone slid into the back seat,
smelling of expensive cologne and cold rain.
"You took a big risk meeting me here,
Nico,"
Antonio whispered,
leaning forward.
"Lorenzo has eyes everywhere in this district."
"Lorenzo is distracted,"
Nico spat bitterly,
lighting a cheap cigarette with trembling fingers.
"He spends his days buying silk dresses for a maid,"
"paying for private schools,"
"and putting fifty of our best soldiers on penthouse security duty!"
"While we work the wet docks in freezing rain,"
"he builds a palace for a twelve-year-old girl!"
"The men are getting restless,
Antonio."
"They feel he has lost his killer instinct."
Antonio smiled darkly in the shadow of the car interior,
knowing he had found the exact crack in Lorenzo's armor he needed.
"Then help us replace him,
Nico,"
Antonio offered smoothly.
"Lorenzo has a massive fifty-million-dollar shipment of high-end pharmaceutical machinery arriving at Pier 42 this Thursday night."
"It is the largest legal import contract the Moretti family has signed this year."
"If that shipment disappears,"
"or if it is found loaded with illegal military weapons,"
"federal authorities will seize all Moretti commercial licenses,"
"and the syndicate bosses will strip Lorenzo of his leadership title for gross negligence."
Nico hesitated,
a flicker of fear touching his eyes.
"Lorenzo will know it was an inside job,"
Nico whispered nervously.
"He will kill anyone involved."
"He won't know it was you,"
Antonio assured him,
placing a heavy leather bag filled with one million dollars in cold cash onto the seat beside Nico.
"My men will raid Pier 42 at midnight Thursday."
"All you have to do is order your dock guards to take an extended coffee break at eleven-thirty."
"Once Lorenzo falls,"
"you will become the head caporegime of the northern docks under Falcone leadership."
Nico looked down at the bag of cash,
his greed overpowering his fifteen years of loyalty to Lorenzo.
He swallowed hard and nodded slowly.
"Eleven-thirty Thursday,"
Nico agreed,
his voice raspy.
"The gates at Pier 42 will be wide open."
Meanwhile,
at the Carter penthouse,
the atmosphere was surprisingly cozy despite the rising storm outside.
Emily sat on the rug in the living room,
playing gently with baby Noah,
who was now laughing happily as he crawled after a small red ball.
Sarah was in the kitchen,
baking fresh vanilla cookies,
the warm,
sweet aroma filling the large apartment.
Lorenzo sat at the dining table,
reading through shipping manifests with Dante,
his sharp eyes reviewing every detail of the upcoming Pier 42 arrival.
Suddenly,
Dante’s phone vibrated silently on the table.
Dante picked it up,
listened for ten seconds without speaking a word,
and then hung up,
his face growing intensely serious.
"Boss,"
Dante said quietly,
stepping closer to Lorenzo.
"Our encrypted surveillance on Nico’s vehicle picked up an unauthorized meeting twenty minutes ago."
"He met with Antonio Falcone near the northern wharves."
Lorenzo did not look surprised.
He slowly closed the shipping manifest,
his dark eyes growing deep and unreadable like an abyss.
"Nico..."
Lorenzo murmured softly,
a trace of quiet disappointment lingering in his tone.
"I gave that man a home,"
"I gave him territory,"
"and I fed his family for fifteen years."
"And he sells his honor to the Falcones for chump change."
"Should I eliminate him tonight,
Boss?"
Dante asked calmly,
his hand instinctively resting near his shoulder holster.
"No,"
Lorenzo replied,
standing up slowly from the table.
"If we eliminate Nico tonight,"
"Antonio will retreat into the shadows and wait for another opportunity."
"Let Nico open the gates at Pier 42 Thursday night."
"Let Antonio Falcone bring his entire mercenary crew to the docks."
May you like
"And when they enter my territory,"
"we will bury the Falcone family beneath the freezing river waters."
