Chapter 9 - The Symphony of Screams

The potent painkillers pulled me into a dark,

dreamless void for several hours,

a much-needed respite for my battered,

exhausted brain.

When I finally clawed my way back to consciousness,

the bright overhead lights in the medical bay had been mercifully dimmed,

casting the sterile room in a soft,

soothing gray twilight.

The doctor was sitting quietly at a small desk in the corner,

typing away on a laptop,

while the rhythmic,

steady beeping of my heart monitor served as the only sound in the suffocating silence.

I tried to shift my weight,

pleasantly surprised to find that the blinding,

sharp agony in my ribs had dulled to a deep,

manageable ache,

allowing me to breathe much easier than before.

I slowly pushed myself up on my elbows,

ignoring the doctor’s immediate protests,

swinging my bare legs over the side of the elevated medical bed.

"Miss Harper,

you must lie back down,"

the doctor insisted,

rushing over to place a firm hand on my shoulder,

"you have suffered severe physical trauma,

your body desperately needs uninterrupted rest."

"I have rested enough,"

I replied stubbornly,

shrugging off his hand with more strength than I thought I possessed,

"I need to find Dante,

I need to know what is happening with the security breach."

Before the doctor could physically restrain me,

a horrifying,

blood-curdling scream echoed down the concrete hallway outside the medical bay,

vibrating through the thick walls and rattling the metal instruments on the nearby tray.

The sound was so filled with pure,

unadulterated agony that it made my blood run instantly cold,

a primal noise that belonged in a medieval dungeon,

not a modern command center.

The doctor visibly flinched,

his face turning a pale shade of sickly gray,

while my own stomach tied itself into a tight,

nauseating knot of absolute dread.

"What was that?"

I demanded,

my voice shaking slightly,

staring at the closed metal doors as if a monster was about to burst through them.

"Mr. Moretti is conducting an interrogation,"

the doctor answered quietly,

looking away from my horrified gaze,

focusing entirely on the floor tiles,

"it is best if we remain in here,

miss,

some things are not meant for civilian ears."

Another scream ripped through the air,

louder and more desperate than the first,

followed by the heavy,

sickening sound of a blunt object repeatedly striking flesh and bone.

I felt a wave of dizziness wash over me,

the stark realization of who Dante truly was violently colliding with the complex,

protective feelings I had been developing for him.

I had always known he was a criminal,

I had always known he commanded dangerous,

violent men,

but seeing the sterile ledgers and typing up threatening emails was a completely different universe than listening to him physically torture a man to death.

I stood up on shaky legs,

ignoring the protests of my bruised muscles and the frantic warnings of the doctor,

pulling the oversized suit jacket tightly around my hospital gown.

"Do not go out there,"

the doctor pleaded,

stepping directly into my path,

his eyes wide with genuine panic,

"if he sees you wandering the halls,

he will have my head on a silver platter."

"Then tell him I overpowered you,"

I countered coldly,

pushing past the older man with surprising determination,

hitting the release button on the wall to open the heavy sliding doors.

I stepped out into the bright,

bustling hallway of the command center,

following the chilling sounds of suffering toward a heavily guarded corridor in the restricted sector.

Two massive guards stood in front of a thick steel door,

their faces completely devoid of emotion as another agonizing shriek echoed from the other side of the heavy metal frame.

They immediately crossed their automatic rifles over the doorway when they saw me approach,

blocking my path with silent,

intimidating authority.

"Move,"

I commanded,

trying to project a level of confidence I absolutely did not feel,

praying my status as Dante’s secretary still held weight down in this literal hell.

"Boss gave strict orders,"

one of the guards grunted,

his eyes flickering nervously over my bruised face and Dante’s distinctive jacket,

"nobody enters interrogation three,

nobody interrupts his work."

"I am not just anybody,"

I stated firmly,

my heart pounding furiously against my ribs,

"open the door,

or I will personally ensure you are standing on the unemployment line by morning."

The guards exchanged a deeply hesitant look,

clearly caught between the wrath of their terrifying boss and the sudden,

unpredictable authority of the woman he had just burned the city down to protect.

Slowly,

reluctantly,

one of them reached for the heavy steel latch,

pulling the massive door open just a few inches,

allowing the horrific stench of copper blood and extreme terror to spill out into the pristine hallway.

I pushed past them,

stepping into the dimly lit,

concrete cell,

and instantly froze,

completely paralyzed by the sheer brutality of the scene unfolding before my eyes.

The Russian assassin was strapped tightly to a heavy metal chair in the center of the room,

his face completely unrecognizable beneath a mask of thick,

dark blood and severe swelling,

his chest heaving with wet,

ragged breaths.

Dante stood standing over him,

his white shirt completely ruined,

his massive fists coated in fresh crimson,

holding a pair of heavy,

blood-stained steel pliers in his right hand.

He looked up as I entered the room,

his dark eyes wild and hollow,

a terrifying,

demonic void that sent a paralyzing jolt of pure terror straight into my soul,

May you like

forcing me to finally confront the beautiful,

lethal monster I had inadvertently fallen in love with.
