Chapter 6 - Blood on the Marble

The echoing blast of the explosion still rang violently in my ears,
a high-pitched whine that drowned out the frantic beating of my own fragile heart.
Dante moved away from the bed with the grace of a predatory shadow,
his tall frame melting into the crimson darkness of the emergency lights,
leaving me utterly alone in the massive expanse of the guest suite.
The heavy oak door clicked shut behind him,
a final sound of separation that sealed me inside this gilded cage.
I could hear the muffled,
terrifying symphony of automatic gunfire erupting from the lower levels of the estate,
a brutal rhythm of death that shook the very foundations of the historic mansion.
I clutched the silk sheets with trembling fingers,
my knuckles turning bone-white under the immense pressure of my paralyzing fear,
while the sharp pain in my fractured ribs flared up with every rapid breath I took.
This was not a corporate hostile takeover,
this was not a subtle game of blackmail and boardroom intimidation,
this was a full-scale military assault on the most heavily guarded compound in the entire state.
I forced myself to slide slowly down the edge of the mattress,
gritting my teeth as a fiery spike of agony shot entirely through my bruised torso,
forcing a silent scream into the back of my dry throat.
I had to find somewhere to hide,
somewhere safe away from the heavy oak door that suddenly seemed as fragile as thin paper.
The floorboards felt freezing against my bare feet,
a stark contrast to the burning adrenaline that flooded my exhausted veins,
pushing my battered body far past its breaking point.
I crawled awkwardly toward the massive mahogany wardrobe sitting in the far corner of the bedroom,
every inch of movement costing me a heavy toll in physical suffering,
my vision blurring with fresh tears of absolute desperation.
Outside the reinforced glass windows,
the dark sky was abruptly illuminated by the bright,
lethal flashes of muzzle fire,
painting the towering oak trees in brief,
violent bursts of artificial lightning.
Victor’s men had breached the outer perimeter walls,
bypassing millions of dollars in state-of-the-art security systems,
bringing a ghost war directly to Dante’s front doorstep.
I finally reached the heavy wooden wardrobe,
pulling the brass handle with shaking hands,
and slipped inside the suffocating darkness of the narrow space.
The scent of expensive cedar and Dante’s lingering cologne wrapped around me,
a strange,
intoxicating comfort in the middle of an absolute nightmare,
reminding me of the terrifying man who had sworn to protect me with his own life.
I curled my knees tightly to my chest,
pressing my face into the soft fabric of a hanging cashmere coat,
praying to a God I had not spoken to in years,
begging for Dante to survive the slaughter happening just a few floors below me.
Minutes dragged on like agonizing hours,
each second measured by the relentless,
deafening staccato of gunfire echoing through the ventilation shafts,
a terrifying reminder of the brutal reality of the criminal underworld.
Then,
the gunfire suddenly ceased,
replaced by a chilling,
absolute silence that was somehow infinitely more terrifying than the noise of the battle.
I held my breath in the pitch-black wardrobe,
straining my ears to catch any sound of footsteps,
any indication of who had emerged victorious from the bloody clash in the marble foyer.
Heavy,
deliberate boots thudded against the hardwood floor of the hallway,
moving slowly,
methodically toward the guest suite where I was currently hiding.
The doorknob turned with a sharp click,
and the heavy oak door groaned as it was pushed open,
letting the crimson emergency light spill back into the room.
I squeezed my eyes shut,
my heart hammering violently against my bruised ribs,
preparing for the absolute worst,
preparing to look into the cold eyes of a Russian assassin.
"Harper,"
a deep,
gravelly voice called out into the empty room,
the sound rough with exhaustion and dripping with raw,
unfiltered violence.
It was Dante.
I pushed the wardrobe door open,
tumbling out onto the soft carpet with a pathetic,
stifled sob,
unable to hold back the overwhelming flood of sheer relief.
Dante immediately dropped to his knees beside me,
his large hands gripping my face,
his thumbs frantically brushing over my bruised cheeks to check for new injuries.
He was a terrifying sight to behold,
his pristine white dress shirt torn and soaked in dark,
crimson blood that I prayed belonged entirely to his enemies,
his knuckles bruised and split open from raw,
brutal combat.
"Are you hurt?"
he demanded roughly,
his dark eyes scanning every inch of my trembling body,
his chest heaving with heavy,
labored breaths.
"I am fine,"
I choked out,
reaching up to touch his blood-stained collar,
my fingers shaking uncontrollably,
"you are bleeding,
Dante,
there is so much blood."
"It is not mine,"
he stated coldly,
his voice void of any human empathy,
a chilling confirmation of the massacre he had just orchestrated downstairs.
He stood up smoothly,
ignoring the carnage painted across his own body,
and reached down to scoop me into his strong arms,
lifting me effortlessly despite my protests and the sharp pain radiating from my ribs.
"We cannot stay here,"
Dante announced,
his jaw set in a hard,
unforgiving line,
"the main gate is completely compromised,
and Victor is sending a second wave of mercenaries,
we have to move into the catacombs."
I rested my head against his broad chest,
listening to the steady,
calming rhythm of his heart,
May you like
realizing that my entire world had irrevocably shifted,
binding my fate to a man who ruled the shadows with a crown of blood.
