Chapter 7 - The Catacombs of the King

The air in the hidden passageway was incredibly damp,
smelling strongly of ancient earth,
crumbled stone,
and the metallic tang of old rust.
Dante carried me effortlessly down a spiraling,
endless flight of concrete stairs,
leaving the luxurious,
blood-soaked halls of the main estate far behind us,
descending deep into the forgotten bowels of the earth.
The emergency red lights did not reach this far down,
leaving us entirely reliant on the harsh,
narrow beam of a tactical flashlight gripped firmly in Dante’s bloodied hand.
"Where are we going?"
I whispered,
my voice echoing softly against the narrow,
claustrophobic stone walls,
the sound swallowed instantly by the vast,
oppressive darkness ahead of us.
"During the prohibition era,"
Dante explained quietly,
his breathing perfectly even despite the heavy physical exertion of carrying me,
"my grandfather built a massive network of smuggling tunnels beneath this entire property."
He adjusted his grip on my waist,
ensuring my fractured ribs were not bearing any unnecessary pressure,
his touch gentle yet incredibly possessive.
"They connect to a private underground bunker,"
he continued,
his eyes scanning the shadows ahead,
"a fully fortified safehouse that is entirely off the grid,
unknown to the city planners,
unknown to the police,
and most importantly,
unknown to Victor."
I shivered against him,
the cold,
dank air penetrating the thin fabric of my silk hospital gown,
making my bruised muscles seize up in painful,
involuntary spasms.
Dante noticed my discomfort immediately,
stopping in the middle of the dark corridor,
gently setting me down on my feet while keeping one strong arm wrapped securely around my waist to support my weight.
He stripped off his ruined,
blood-soaked tactical vest,
tossing it onto the dirty stone floor with a heavy thud,
before unbuttoning his tailored suit jacket and draping it carefully over my trembling shoulders.
The jacket was massive on my small frame,
but it retained the incredible,
comforting heat of his body,
smelling faintly of gunpowder,
expensive cologne,
and the metallic scent of fresh blood.
"Thank you,"
I murmured,
pulling the lapels tighter around my chest,
looking up into his shadowed,
incredibly handsome face,
feeling a strange,
inappropriate flutter in my stomach that had absolutely nothing to do with fear.
"Do not thank me,"
Dante said harshly,
his eyes flashing with a sudden,
intense darkness in the beam of the flashlight,
"you are down in this hell because of me,
Harper,
because I failed to keep my absolute most valuable asset protected from the monsters standing at my door."
"I am not just an asset,"
I argued softly,
the words slipping out before I could censor them,
fueled by the bizarre intimacy of our dark,
isolated surroundings.
Dante stepped closer,
backing me gently against the cold stone wall of the tunnel,
his large hand coming up to cup my jaw,
his thumb tracing the edge of my bruised cheekbone with agonizing slowness.
"No,"
he agreed,
his voice dropping to a low,
dangerous whisper that sent a violent shiver down my spine,
"you ceased being a simple asset the moment I saw you lying broken in that hospital bed,
the moment I realized what my life would actually look like if Victor had successfully killed you."
He leaned in,
his forehead resting gently against mine,
his warm breath fanning across my cold skin,
creating a terrifyingly beautiful bubble of intimacy in the middle of a literal war zone.
"I will tear the Bratva apart piece by bloody piece,"
he vowed,
the promise vibrating through his chest and into mine,
"I will erase Victor’s name from the earth,
and I will ensure that no one ever looks at you with a weapon in their hand again."
A distant,
muffled explosion rumbled through the ceiling above us,
shaking dust and loose pebbles from the stone archway,
rudely interrupting the heavy,
charged moment stretching between us.
Dante pulled back instantly,
the soft,
vulnerable look in his eyes vanishing like a blown-out candle,
replaced once again by the cold,
calculating stare of a ruthless syndicate boss.
"We need to keep moving,"
he commanded,
scooping me back into his arms before I could even attempt to walk on my own,
his strides long and purposeful as we ventured deeper into the endless labyrinth.
The tunnels twisted and turned,
a complex maze designed to disorient and trap anyone who did not know the exact,
secret route to the hidden sanctuary.
We walked for what felt like an absolute eternity,
the silence broken only by the sound of his heavy boots crunching against the gravel,
and the ragged,
painful sound of my own shallow breathing.
Finally,
a massive,
solid steel door appeared at the end of the long corridor,
illuminated by a single,
flickering yellow bulb hanging from a rusted wire in the ceiling.
Dante approached a hidden keypad embedded in the stone wall next to the door,
punching in a long,
complicated sequence of numbers with rapid precision,
followed by pressing his thumb against a biometric scanner.
The steel door hissed loudly,
heavy mechanical locks disengaging with a series of loud clanks,
before swinging open to reveal a massive,
brightly lit underground facility that looked like a high-tech military command center.
"Welcome to the underworld,
Harper,"
Dante said softly,
carrying me over the reinforced threshold,
May you like
stepping out of the dark past and into the blinding light of our new,
dangerous reality.
