Chapter 18 - The Shattered Crown

The once immaculate,

gleaming kitchen of the Moretti estate now strongly resembled a horrific,

blood-soaked slaughterhouse,

a stark,

violent testament to the absolute brutality of the underworld war we had just been unwillingly thrust into.

Smoke hung heavily in the stagnant air,

mixing with the overwhelming,

coppery stench of fresh blood and the sharp,

acrid scent of discharged cordite,

burning the back of my raw,

dry throat with every shallow,

painful breath I took.

Marcus stepped carefully over the lifeless,

sprawling body of the mercenary I had shot,

his heavily scarred face completely devoid of its usual,

intimidating harshness,

replaced instead by a look of profound,

genuine gratitude.

He looked down at me,

his dark eyes softening slightly,

and gave a short,

respectful nod of his head,

a silent,

powerful acknowledgment that I was no longer just the fragile,

civilian secretary,

but a true,

tested member of their violent,

loyal family.

Dante helped me slowly,

carefully to my feet,

his strong arm wrapping securely around my trembling waist,

supporting the majority of my weight as a fresh,

dizzying wave of sheer exhaustion washed violently over my battered body.

"We cannot stop here,"

Dante commanded,

his voice returning to its normal,

authoritative,

unyielding tone,

his dark eyes scanning the ruined,

bullet-riddled doors that led directly into the estate's massive,

opulent grand foyer.

"Lorenzo and his remaining guards are barricaded in the library,

protecting the primary entrance to the bunker,

preparing to detonate the heavy explosives they planted above our heads."

We moved out of the devastated kitchen,

stepping carefully over the debris and the bodies,

entering the long,

luxurious hallway that connected the servant quarters to the main,

public areas of the massive mansion.

The walls here were lined with priceless,

antique oil paintings and delicate,

crystal sconces,

many of which were now completely shattered,

their beautiful,

gilded frames splintered and ruined by stray,

reckless gunfire.

As we approached the grand foyer,

the distant,

muffled sound of frantic,

shouted orders in both Italian and Russian echoed down the long hallway,

confirming that Lorenzo was desperately trying to organize his remaining,

dwindling forces.

The grand foyer was a massive,

two-story open space,

featuring a magnificent,

sweeping marble staircase and a gigantic,

glittering crystal chandelier that hung precariously from the high,

painted ceiling.

Dante signaled for the team to halt just behind the protective cover of the heavy,

carved mahogany archway,

peering carefully around the edge to assess the tactical,

dangerous situation unfolding in the open space.

"They have six men positioned behind overturned antique tables,"

Dante whispered to Marcus,

his tactical mind rapidly processing the angles and the vulnerabilities,

"two on the upper landing with heavy,

automatic rifles,

providing covering fire for the men planting the final charges on the library doors."

"It is a choke point,

boss,"

Marcus observed grimly,

his suppressed weapon raised,

his eyes narrowing as he calculated the extremely high probability of taking severe,

lethal casualties if we simply charged into the open room.

"We do not charge,"

Dante replied coldly,

a dark,

ruthless smile slowly spreading across his handsome,

blood-splattered face,

a smile that promised absolute,

unimaginable destruction,

"we use the architecture against them,

just like my grandfather designed it."

Dante reached toward a seemingly innocent,

decorative bronze statue of a lion resting on a marble pedestal near the archway,

pressing a hidden,

recessed button located deep inside the beast's open,

snarling mouth.

A loud,

mechanical grinding noise immediately echoed through the walls,

and suddenly,

the heavy,

bulletproof steel shutters hidden within the ceiling of the grand foyer slammed violently downward,

completely sealing the massive front windows and plunging the enormous room into chaotic,

disorienting darkness.

"Night vision,"

Dante ordered sharply,

and the strike team simultaneously pulled down the heavy,

green-glowing optical goggles attached to their tactical helmets,

instantly gaining a massive,

overwhelming advantage over the suddenly blinded,

panicking Russian mercenaries.

"Stay here,"

Dante whispered to me,

pressing me gently but firmly against the wall behind the thick mahogany archway,

"do not move,

do not make a sound,

I will be right back."

Before I could even attempt to protest,

Dante and his men surged forward into the pitch-black foyer like a pack of starving,

lethal wolves descending upon a flock of helpless,

blind sheep.

The ensuing slaughter was terrifyingly swift,

a brutal,

one-sided massacre conducted in complete darkness,

marked only by the suppressed,

spitting sounds of Marcus's weapons and the heavy,

deafening booms of Dante's combat shotgun.

Screams of absolute terror and agonizing pain echoed loudly through the dark,

open space,

the sounds bouncing wildly off the marble floors and the high ceilings,

creating a nightmarish,

hellish cacophony that made me squeeze my eyes tightly shut.

I clutched the heavy pistol in my trembling hands,

pressing my back firmly against the cold,

solid wall,

praying desperately that Dante would emerge from the darkness completely unscathed,

that this horrific,

bloody nightmare would finally come to an end.

Within less than two agonizing minutes,

the screaming abruptly stopped,

replaced by the heavy,

labored breathing of the victorious strike team and the sickening,

wet sounds of bodies being dragged across the expensive marble tiles.

The emergency backup lights suddenly flickered on,

casting a dim,

eerie red glow across the grand foyer,

revealing a scene of absolute,

unprecedented carnage that looked like an ancient,

savage battlefield.

Dante stood in the very center of the room,

completely surrounded by the dead,

ruined bodies of his enemies,

his chest heaving with exertion,

his dark eyes locking immediately onto my hidden position behind the archway.

"It is clear,"

Dante called out,

his voice echoing loudly in the massive space,

wiping a fresh streak of crimson blood from his cheek with the back of his hand,

"come out,

May you like

Harper,

we are going to the library."
