Chapter 15 - Ascent from the Underworld

The journey out of the fortified armory and into the dark,

damp smuggling tunnels was a tense,

nerve-wracking experience,

a silent,

methodical march toward a highly anticipated,

incredibly violent confrontation.

Dante led the heavily armed vanguard,

moving through the claustrophobic stone corridors with the silent,

lethal grace of a hunting panther,

his heavy combat shotgun raised and ready,

his dark eyes scanning every single shadow for hidden threats.

I walked directly behind him,

my trembling hands gripping the cold,

heavy pistol with a white-knuckled intensity,

every painful step jarring my fractured ribs and sending sharp,

fiery spikes of pure agony shooting through my bruised torso.

The secondary tunnels were even narrower and darker than the main passageway,

smelling strongly of ancient,

rotting wood,

stagnant water,

and the terrifying,

metallic scent of our own nervous sweat.

Marcus and the rest of the elite strike team followed closely behind me,

their footsteps remarkably silent on the loose gravel,

their weapons sweeping the dark corners in a highly synchronized,

deadly choreography of professional violence.

We moved in absolute,

terrifying silence,

communicating entirely through sharp,

precise hand signals that Dante relayed back to the team,

a language of war that I did not fully understand but instinctively followed with desperate,

blind trust.

Above us,

the muffled,

distant sounds of heavy boots stomping across the marble floors of the estate occasionally echoed down through the ventilation shafts,

a terrifying reminder that Lorenzo and Victor’s mercenaries were currently tearing the mansion apart in their frantic search for the bunker's hidden entrance.

"We are approaching the wine cellar,"

Dante whispered,

his voice barely audible over the soft dripping of water falling from the low stone ceiling,

halting the column with a raised,

clenched fist,

"the entrance is concealed behind the vintage Bordeaux racks,

it is a heavy,

mechanized stone door."

He turned back to look at me,

his intense,

dark eyes searching my pale face in the dim beam of the tactical flashlight,

silently assessing my physical ability to continue this dangerous,

exhausting ascent into hell.

"I am fine,"

I mouthed silently,

forcing a small,

unconvincing smile onto my trembling lips,

refusing to let him see the overwhelming waves of pain and dizzying nausea threatening to pull me down into the cold darkness.

Dante did not look entirely convinced,

but he nodded curtly,

turning his attention back to the massive,

damp stone wall blocking our path,

searching the rough surface for the hidden,

recessed lever that controlled the ancient mechanism.

He found the hidden trigger,

pulling it down with a heavy,

straining grunt,

and the massive stone wall slowly began to grind open with a loud,

terrifyingly loud scraping noise that echoed violently down the narrow tunnel.

We all froze instantly,

holding our breath,

weapons raised and pointed toward the slowly widening gap,

waiting for a hail of Russian bullets to tear through the darkness,

but the only sound that greeted us was the quiet,

humming vibration of the expensive wine refrigerators.

Dante slipped through the narrow opening first,

his massive frame disappearing quickly into the shadows of the extensive wine cellar,

sweeping the large,

climate-controlled room with the barrel of his shotgun,

clearing the immediate area with ruthless,

professional efficiency.

"Clear,"

Dante whispered over the short-range radio communicator strapped to his tactical vest,

reaching back through the opening to grab my arm and gently pull me into the cool,

dry air of the massive cellar.

The room was completely dark,

save for the small,

blinking LED lights on the expensive cooling units,

casting eerie,

flickering shadows across the thousands of priceless glass bottles neatly stacked in the mahogany racks.

"The main stairwell is just down the hall,"

I whispered,

leaning close to Dante’s ear,

my breath trembling against his warm skin,

"but the secondary service elevator in the back corridor connects directly to the kitchen,

bypassing the main foyer completely."

"Good,"

Dante replied softly,

his eyes scanning the dark room,

his tactical mind instantly adjusting the assault plan based on my valuable,

insider knowledge,

"we take the service elevator,

we hit them from behind while they are focused on the primary bunker entrance in the library."

We began to move quietly through the intricate maze of high wooden wine racks,

our footsteps completely muffled by the thick,

expensive Persian rugs covering the cold stone floor,

inching closer and closer to the heavy oak door that led to the service corridor.

Suddenly,

a harsh,

guttural voice echoed from the hallway outside,

speaking rapidly in aggressive,

fluent Russian,

followed by the heavy,

distinctive click of an automatic rifle safety being disengaged.

Dante instantly shoved me hard against the wooden wine rack,

pinning my body to the shelves with his massive,

heavy frame,

covering my mouth with his large hand to completely stifle the sharp gasp of pain that escaped my lips.

Two large,

heavily armed Russian mercenaries stepped through the doorway into the wine cellar,

sweeping the dark room with high-powered tactical flashlights,

the bright beams of light slicing violently through the shadows just inches away from where we were hiding.

I squeezed my eyes shut,

my heart hammering so loudly against my fractured ribs that I was absolutely terrified they would hear the frantic,

desperate rhythm,

my trembling fingers gripping the heavy pistol so tightly they began to go completely numb.

Dante remained perfectly still against me,

his chest barely moving,

his breathing so incredibly shallow he seemed to have turned into living,

breathing stone,

a lethal statue waiting for the exact,

perfect moment to strike.

The beam of the flashlight swept past our faces,

illuminating the cold,

murderous intent burning brilliantly in Dante’s dark eyes,

a terrifying,

demonic promise of imminent death that made the very air in the cellar freeze.

The first mercenary took a slow step down our aisle,

May you like

his heavy boots crunching softly on the carpet,

completely unaware that he was walking directly into the deadly,
