Chapter 10 - The Judas Protocol

The heavy steel door clanged shut behind me,

sealing me inside the small,

concrete interrogation room with the brutalized prisoner and the terrifying man who had caused the horrific damage.

Dante froze completely,

the heavy steel pliers still gripped tightly in his blood-stained hand,

his chest rising and falling with rapid,

adrenaline-fueled breaths.

The demonic,

hollow void in his dark eyes instantly shattered the moment he saw me standing there,

replaced by a sudden,

overwhelming wave of absolute panic and desperate regret.

He immediately dropped the bloody pliers onto a metal tray with a loud,

clattering crash,

instinctively taking a frantic step backwards,

trying to put physical distance between his own monstrous actions and my horrified gaze.

"Harper,"

Dante breathed out,

his voice cracking under the heavy weight of a thousand unspoken apologies,

"you should not be in here,

you should not see me like this."

I stood entirely frozen near the doorway,

my good eye wide with shock,

my stomach churning violently at the overwhelming,

coppery stench of fresh blood and sheer human terror that saturated the cold air.

I looked down at the Russian assassin strapped to the heavy metal chair,

his head lolling weakly to the side,

one of his eyes swollen completely shut,

his lips split and bleeding profusely onto his torn shirt.

This was the man who had ordered my attack,

the man who had delivered the terrifying message from Victor,

the monster who had laughed as my face was smashed violently into the freezing concrete.

I waited for a wave of satisfying vindication to wash over me,

I waited to feel glad that he was suffering,

but all I felt was a deep,

hollow sickness spreading through my chest,

a profound sadness for the ugly,

brutal reality of this hidden world.

"Did he talk?"

I asked,

my voice surprisingly steady despite the violent trembling of my hands,

surprising both Dante and myself with my cold,

clinical detachment.

Dante stared at me in stunned silence for a long moment,

wiping a streak of dark blood from his cheek with the back of his bruised wrist,

clearly expecting me to run away screaming in absolute terror.

"He talked,"

Dante finally confirmed,

his tone dropping back to a low,

serious rumble,

"Victor did not orchestrate the attack on you alone,

he had inside help,

someone with high-level access to my private security schedules."

The words hit me like a physical blow to the stomach,

knocking the precious air right out of my lungs,

making the stark concrete room spin slightly in my drug-addled vision.

"A traitor,"

I whispered,

my mind racing through the short list of Dante’s inner circle,

the trusted lieutenants,

the financial advisors,

the men who had sworn blood oaths to protect the syndicate.

"Someone gave Victor the exact location of your apartment,

and the precise times of my security patrols,"

Dante explained,

stepping carefully around the pool of blood gathering on the floor,

moving closer to me with cautious,

measured steps.

"They used you as bait,"

Dante continued,

his jaw clenching so tight I could hear his teeth grinding together,

"they knew I would burn the entire city down to protect you,

they knew I would bring you here,

to the bunker,

leaving the main estate completely vulnerable to a massive assault."

It was a brilliant,

ruthless strategy,

a masterclass in psychological warfare designed by a mind that understood Dante’s hidden weaknesses better than anyone else in the entire criminal underworld.

"Who is it?"

I demanded,

stepping forward,

my fear of the blood and the violence momentarily eclipsed by a burning,

furious desire for absolute justice.

Dante looked back at the unconscious Russian,

his expression hardening into a mask of pure,

unadulterated hatred,

a terrifying promise of future violence that made the hairs on my arms stand up.

"He only knew a codename,"

Dante revealed,

turning his dark gaze back to my bruised face,

"the Russians call him the Architect,

but the decryption of your hidden drive might finally give us his real name."

He reached into his pocket,

pulling out the silver evidence bag containing my backup drive,

the small device glinting innocently under the harsh fluorescent lights of the interrogation cell.

"Marcus is setting up a secure terminal in the main command center right now,"

Dante said,

offering me his clean,

unbloodied left hand,

a silent invitation to step out of the shadows and stand firmly by his side as an equal.

"Let's go find our Judas,"

I agreed softly,

placing my trembling fingers securely into his strong,

warm grip,

ignoring the violent protests of my fractured ribs,

ready to plunge headfirst into the darkest depths of his criminal empire.

We walked out of the horrific interrogation room together,

leaving the broken assassin behind in the dark,

marching united down the bright,

bustling hallway toward the massive computer terminal that held the explosive secrets of the past ten years.

Marcus was waiting for us at the main console,

his scarred fingers flying rapidly across the illuminated keyboard,

running complex decryption algorithms against the heavily encrypted files I had painstakingly hidden behind my refrigerator.

"I am in,"

Marcus announced suddenly,

hitting the final enter key with a loud,

satisfying smack,

bringing up a massive spreadsheet filled with thousands of offshore account numbers,

shell company registries,

and highly classified communication logs.

"Run a cross-reference search,"

Dante commanded immediately,

standing directly behind Marcus’s chair,

his imposing presence dominating the busy command center,

"look for any unauthorized access to the East Wing security manifests from the past forty-eight hours."

The computer processed the request,

lines of green code scrolling rapidly across the massive black screen,

searching for the digital footprint of the traitor who had sold my life to the Russian mafia.

A single,

solitary file finally popped up on the center of the monitor,

highlighting a secure login credential that had bypassed the main firewall at two in the morning,

just hours before I was attacked in the alleyway.

Dante leaned closer to the bright screen,

his dark eyes scanning the digital signature,

and I watched in absolute horror as all the blood slowly drained from his handsome face,

leaving him looking like a carved marble statue of pure grief.

"It cannot be,"

Dante whispered,

his voice cracking,

a sound of such profound,

devastating betrayal that it shattered the tough,

unbreakable shell he had worn for the entire duration of the crisis.

I looked at the name flashing in bold,

red letters across the computer monitor,

my own heart stopping dead in my chest,

my mind refusing to accept the horrific,

impossible truth staring us right in the face.

The Architect,

the traitor who had orchestrated the brutal attack,

May you like

the man who had allied with the Russian Bratva to destroy Dante’s empire from the inside out,

was his own blood brother,
