Chapter 20 - The Fall of the Architect

The immense,
suffocating tension in the ruined library was incredibly palpable,
a heavy,
invisible weight that pressed down violently upon my chest,
making my fractured ribs scream in fiery,
relentless agony as I watched the two powerful brothers face off amidst the destruction.
Lorenzo took a frantic,
stumbling step backward,
his expensive,
tailored suit looking completely disheveled,
his dark hair plastered wildly to his sweaty,
pale forehead,
a stark,
pathetic contrast to the calm,
lethal elegance of Dante standing just a few feet away.
"You think you have won,
Dante?"
Lorenzo spat viciously,
his voice trembling with a toxic,
poisonous mixture of profound jealousy and absolute,
all-consuming hatred,
his thumb hovering dangerously over the red button of the manual detonator.
"You think because you survived one night of violence,
that you are still the untouchable,
invincible king of this city?"
Dante did not flinch,
he did not raise his weapon,
he simply continued to stare at his brother with a cold,
deadly expression that lacked all human warmth,
a chilling void that terrified me more than the Russian mercenaries standing in the corners.
"I do not think I have won,
Lorenzo,"
Dante replied softly,
his deep voice echoing strangely in the high-ceilinged room,
"I know that I have survived,
because that is exactly what I do,
I survive the monsters,
even when the monster is wearing my own blood."
"You are the monster!"
Lorenzo screamed,
tears of pure,
frustrated rage spilling over his dark,
bloodshot eyes,
pointing an accusatory,
shaking finger at Dante’s imposing chest.
"You suffocated me,
you treated me like a child,
you kept me completely locked in the shadows while you basked in the glory and the fear of the entire underworld!"
He cast a wild,
manic glance in my direction,
his eyes landing entirely on my small,
battered frame standing quietly behind the protective,
massive shield of Marcus’s body,
and an ugly,
cruel sneer twisted his handsome face.
"And you did it all for her,"
Lorenzo sneered,
his voice dripping with sickening,
venomous disgust,
"you threw away our family’s entire legacy,
you burned a decade of profitable peace with the Bratva,
just to protect a pathetic,
weak little secretary who does not even belong in our world."
The incredibly harsh,
cruel words hit me like a physical blow,
but before I could even process the painful insult,
Dante moved with a sudden,
terrifying blur of explosive speed,
closing the distance between them faster than anyone could react.
He did not draw his heavy combat knife,
he did not raise his powerful shotgun,
he simply lashed out with his massive,
bare hand,
striking Lorenzo violently across the face with a sickening,
bone-crushing crack that echoed loudly through the entire library.
Lorenzo cried out in sudden,
shocking agony,
stumbling backward and crashing heavily into a massive,
antique oak desk,
the small,
black detonator flying harmlessly from his trembling grasp and skittering across the floor toward Marcus.
Dante was instantly on top of him,
his large hands gripping Lorenzo violently by the lapels of his ruined,
expensive suit,
hauling his treacherous brother effortlessly into the air and slamming him brutally against the heavy,
wooden bookshelves.
"Do not ever speak her name again,"
Dante growled,
his voice a terrifying,
demonic roar that shook the very foundations of the room,
his dark eyes blazing with a feral,
uncontrollable fury that I had never truly witnessed before.
"She has more loyalty,
more courage,
and more honor in her broken,
fractured ribs than you have in your entire,
treacherous,
pathetic existence!"
Lorenzo struggled weakly against the overwhelming,
crushing grip,
blood pouring freely from his broken,
ruined nose,
staining his crisp,
white shirt a brilliant,
sickening shade of crimson,
his eyes finally reflecting the absolute,
stark terror of a man realizing he was about to die.
"Dante,
please,"
Lorenzo choked out,
the arrogant,
manic bravado completely vanishing,
replaced entirely by the desperate,
pitiful pleading of a terrified,
beaten coward,
"I am your brother,
our father's blood runs in both our veins,
you cannot kill me."
The entire room fell incredibly,
deathly silent,
the Russian mercenaries standing completely frozen,
Marcus holding the recovered detonator tightly,
and me,
clutching the heavy pistol against my chest,
waiting to see if the devil would truly murder his own flesh and blood.
Dante stared into Lorenzo's terrified,
pleading eyes for a long,
agonizing eternity,
the heavy,
burdensome weight of a lifetime of shared history and profound,
devastating betrayal warring fiercely within his brilliant,
calculating mind.
Slowly,
the feral,
uncontrollable rage began to drain completely from Dante’s dark eyes,
replaced by a profound,
crushing sorrow that completely broke my heart,
a silent,
mournful acknowledgment that the brother he had loved and protected was already long dead.
He released his violent,
crushing grip on Lorenzo's lapels,
stepping back with a look of pure,
unadulterated disgust,
letting his brother completely collapse into a pathetic,
weeping heap on the ruined library floor.
"You are right,"
Dante whispered coldly,
his voice utterly devoid of any lingering affection or mercy,
turning his broad,
imposing back on the broken traitor,
"I will not kill you,
Lorenzo,
because death is a quick,
merciful escape that you absolutely do not deserve."
Dante walked back toward me,
his eyes locking onto mine with an intense,
protective heat,
before he turned his dark,
unforgiving gaze toward Marcus,
delivering the ultimate,
terrifying sentence.
"Lock him in the deepest,
darkest cell in the catacombs,"
Dante commanded,
his voice ringing with final,
absolute authority,
"he will live the rest of his pathetic,
treacherous life entirely in the dark,
forgotten by the world,
erased completely from the history of this family."
Lorenzo sobbed loudly,
a pathetic,
broken sound of absolute despair,
as Marcus's men moved forward to violently drag him away into the shadows,
effectively ending the short,
disastrous reign of the Architect.
The internal war was finally over,
but as Dante gently wrapped his strong,
protective arms around my shivering,
May you like
exhausted body,
I knew with terrifying certainty that the external war with Victor was just beginning.
