Chapter 5 - The Siege Commences

Night had fallen completely over the estate,
cloaking the sprawling grounds in impenetrable darkness,
save for the harsh glare of the security floodlights cutting through the trees.
I lay in the massive bed,
listening to the distant rumble of thunder rolling across the Chicago skyline,
a heavy storm brewing on the horizon,
mirroring the violent storm raging inside the mansion.
Dante had not returned since he gave the order to Marcus,
leaving me alone with my racing thoughts and the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock.
Every shadow in the room seemed to stretch and twist,
playing tricks on my exhausted,
concussed brain,
making me jump at every creak of the floorboards.
Suddenly,
the heavy oak door swung open,
and Dante strode into the room,
his presence immediately filling the empty space,
sucking the oxygen from the air.
He was wearing a tactical vest over his dress shirt,
a heavy black pistol strapped securely to his thigh,
his eyes burning with a ferocious,
uncontrolled rage.
"They found it,"
Dante announced,
his voice hard and clipped,
leaving no room for misinterpretation.
"Marcus got the drive?"
I asked,
a wave of immense relief washing over me,
slumping back against the silk pillows.
"Marcus got the drive,"
Dante confirmed,
stepping closer to the bed,
his gaze locking onto mine,
"but Victor's men were waiting in the hallway outside your apartment."
My breath hitched in my throat.
"Was anyone hurt?"
I asked,
my voice trembling with sudden fear,
picturing the quiet hallway of my building turning into a bloody war zone.
"Two of my men are dead,"
Dante stated coldly,
the blunt reality of his words hitting me like a physical blow to the chest,
"four of Victor's men are in body bags,
but the rest of them managed to escape down the fire escape."
I covered my mouth with my good hand,
a choked sob escaping my lips,
the guilt crashing down on me like a tidal wave.
"Oh my god,"
I whispered,
tears welling in my eyes,
spilling over my bruised cheeks,
"they died because of my drive,
because I told you to send them there."
Dante closed the distance between us in three long strides,
sitting on the edge of the mattress,
his large hands reaching out to grip my shoulders,
his touch surprisingly gentle despite his terrifying appearance.
"Look at me,"
he commanded softly,
his voice cutting through my rising panic,
forcing me to meet his intense,
dark gaze.
"They died doing their job,"
he told me,
his eyes fiercely determined,
"they died protecting my empire,
and they died ensuring that Victor did not get the ammunition he needs to destroy us."
"Us,"
I repeated the word,
my mind snagging on the implication,
realizing just how deeply I was now entangled in his violent,
ruthless world.
"Yes,
us,"
Dante affirmed,
his thumbs brushing away the tears on my cheeks,
the intimate gesture sending a jolt of pure electricity straight to my heart.
"You are no longer standing on the sidelines,
Harper,
you are standing in the center of the board,
and I will burn this entire city to the ash before I let Victor take another piece of what is mine."
Before I could fully process the weight of his words,
before I could analyze the possessive fire burning in his eyes,
a loud,
shattering explosion echoed through the night air,
rattling the heavy windowpanes of the bedroom.
The crystal glass on the bedside table vibrated wildly,
and the power in the room instantly cut out,
plunging us into absolute,
pitch-black darkness.
Dante moved with lightning speed,
releasing my shoulders and drawing the heavy pistol from his thigh holster in one fluid,
lethal motion.
The emergency backup lights flickered on a second later,
casting an eerie,
blood-red glow across the luxurious bedroom,
illuminating the cold,
murderous intent on Dante's face.
Alarms began to blare throughout the estate,
a deafening siren that signaled a catastrophic breach in the perimeter security,
warning that the wolves had finally arrived at the door.
"Stay exactly where you are,"
Dante ordered,
his voice a low,
dangerous growl,
his eyes scanning the heavy oak door,
calculating the threat.
"Dante,"
I cried out,
terror gripping my heart,
"what is happening,
are they here?"
He turned back to look at me,
his expression unreadable in the crimson emergency light,
a terrifying silhouette of violence and power.
"Victor has decided he does not want to wait,"
Dante said grimly,
cocking the pistol with a sharp,
May you like
metallic click,
"the siege has begun,
