Chapter 5 - The Shackles on the Stage

The sound of the champagne flute shattering on the stage echoed like a gunshot through the room.

Victoria took two frantic steps backward, stumbling against the promotional banner of Sterling National Logistics.

"Julian!" she screamed, her polished voice turning into a shrill shriek.

"Julian, do something!"

"Tell them who I am!"

Julian stood frozen, his eyes darting frantically between the cameras, the Singaporean investors, and the handcuffs in Marcus's hands.

"Detective, this is an outrageous misunderstanding," Julian stammered, raising his hands.

"This is a private domestic matter that has gotten wildly out of hand."

Marcus didn't even look at Julian.

He grabbed Victoria's right wrist with practiced, unyielding force and spun her around against the podium.

"You have the right to remain silent," Marcus recited, his voice booming clearly across the grand hall.

"Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

The cold steel clicked shut around her manicured wrists.

Victoria thrashed, her gold sequins catching the ruthless glare of dozens of media smartphones.

"Get your filthy hands off me!" she shrieked, kicking wildly.

"Julian, tell him you gave me the code!"

"Tell him you told me to get rid of her!"

Those words hung in the air like poison.

The Singaporean delegation stood up from Table One, their faces masked with profound disgust.

Mr. Chen, the lead managing director of the sovereign wealth fund, signaled to his aides.

They gathered their leather dossiers and began walking toward the exit without uttering a single word.

Julian saw two billion dollars in capital walking out the double doors and lunged forward.

"Mr. Chen! Please, wait!" Julian pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation.

"It’s a domestic dispute! It has nothing to do with corporate operations!"

Mr. Chen paused at the edge of the aisle, glanced at my shaved head, then looked Julian directly in the eye.

"A man who cannot control his household cannot manage our maritime supply chain, Mr. Sterling."

"Our agreement is terminated."

Julian looked like he had been struck across the face with a lead pipe.

He turned on me, his eyes bloodshot, his chest heaving with murderous indignation.

"Are you happy now, Sarah?" he snarled, dropping all pretense of civility.

"You just cost this company two billion dollars!"

"You just destroyed everything I spent twelve years building!"

I walked up the three steps of the stage until I was standing inches away from him.

I did not raise my voice.

I did not grimace.

"You did not build this company, Julian."

"My father’s seed capital of forty million dollars built this company."

"My father’s connections with the port unions secured your initial contracts."

"And my silence covered your incompetence for a decade."

I reached out and gently plucked the silk pocket square from his tuxedo breast pocket.

I used it to wipe a tiny drop of Victoria's spattered champagne from my cheek, then let it drop to the floor.

"You thought stripping my hair would break my spirit."

"All it did was strip away the last shred of mercy I had for you."

Marcus dragged a sobbing, cursing Victoria Thorne down the steps and through the center aisle.

The flashes from the press corps illuminated her tear-stained makeup and twisted expression.

Julian stood alone on the illuminated platform, looking like an emperor whose clothes had vanished in a hurricane.

Eleanor Hayes stepped beside me, opening a heavy manila folder.

"The forensic accounting team entered headquarters fifteen minutes ago under court order, Julian."

"By sunrise tomorrow, we will have every receipt, every ledger, and every offshore routing number."

Julian stared at Eleanor, then back at me, a profound, sickening terror finally dawning in his eyes.

"What did you find?" he whispered hoarsely.

"Everything you thought you hid under Victoria's corporate travel budgets," I replied.

May you like

"Goodnight, Julian."

I turned my back on him and walked out of the ballroom, head held high, leaving his empire in ruins behind me.
