Chapter 12 - Bloodlines and Hidden Debts

I gripped the edge of the mahogany desk until the wood bit into the palms of my hands.
"Marcus," I said, keeping my tone frigid and razor-sharp, allowing no tremor of surprise to show.
"I assumed you were rotting in some tax haven in Monaco, hiding from the SEC."
A low, cultured laugh drifted over the receiver, chilling the air in the boardroom.
"Your father always taught you to look at the board, Clara, but he never taught you to look beneath the table," Marcus replied smoothly.
"Julian was a pathetic narcissist who genuinely believed Victoria loved him and that he was outsmarting an heiress."
"He was a useful idiot whose vanity provided the perfect smoke screen while we liquidated your father's private European reserves."
"We?" I asked, signaling Arthur to initiate a trace on the call, though I knew someone as cunning as Marcus had bounced the signal across three continents.
"Did you really believe your mother died of natural complications, or that your father’s heart attack was merely stress-induced?" Marcus asked coldly.
The words struck my chest like a lead hammer, suffocating the breath in my throat.
"Be very careful what lies you spin, Marcus," I snarled, my voice vibrating with lethal intensity.
"Julian thought he was untouchable until I put him in federal prison for eighteen years; do not think your bloodline protects you from the same fate."
"Oh, Julian’s imprisonment was part of the plan, darling," Marcus said with amusement.
"Did you think Victoria Thorne simply stumbled into Julian's bed out of blind admiration?"
"She was on my payroll long before Julian ever brought her into your penthouse."
"Her instructions were to humiliate you, break your spirit, and force you into a hasty, quiet settlement so the company could be sold to the Meridian Syndicate."
"Cutting your hair was an improvisation born of her own petty malice, I admit, but it served its purpose."
"It made you angry, and an angry opponent is predictable."
"I am not angry, Marcus," I replied, feeling my heart steady into a deadly, rhythmic calm. "I am awake."
"Enjoy the penthouse while you can, niece," Marcus said, his tone turning abruptly ominous.
"Because the seventy percent controlling stake you think you reclaimed this morning comes with a poison pill written in your father’s blood."
The line clicked dead.
Arthur looked up from his tablet, his face drained of color as the trace failed against a wall of encrypted servers in Geneva.
"He isn't bluffing, Clara," Arthur said, pulling a yellowed document from the depths of his briefcase.

"Before your father suffered his fatal stroke, he signed an unconditional guarantee for a sovereign debt bond backed by the family estate."
"If that bond matures without payment by the end of this month, Meridian doesn't just take Vance Tower—they own every single asset bearing our name."
