Chapter 19 - The Blood on the Hudson

Within an hour of the London raid, Manhattan was placed on high alert as my private security coordinated with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Marcus Vance was not an ordinary fugitive; he was an apex predator who had operated in the shadows of global finance for forty years.
He knew every blind spot in our infrastructure, every private slipway along the Hudson River, and every weakness in our defensive grid.
I refused Arthur’s desperate pleas to evacuate Vance Tower and take refuge in a secure compound in Virginia.
"My father died hiding his pain, and Julian thought he could shear my soul away by cornering me in my own bedroom," I said, looking out at the dawn light breaking over the Hudson River.
"I will not run from a monster in my own city."
"If Marcus Vance wants my empire, he will have to take it from my hands."
At six-fifteen a.m., a luxury mega-yacht registered under a Panamanian shell company bypassed harbor inspection, cutting its transponders off the coast of Staten Island.
It was cruising aggressively toward the private marina at Chelsea Piers, just three miles from Vance Tower.
My security lead, a former Navy SEAL named Miller, stepped into the room, chambering a round into his sidearm before concealing it beneath his jacket.
"Clara, the yacht’s manifest was falsified, but satellite thermal imaging shows at least eight armed personnel aboard," Miller said coldly.
"The Coast Guard has been dispatched, but with harbor traffic, Marcus has a twelve-minute window to hit the private docks."
"He isn't coming for the building, Miller," I realized suddenly, a cold epiphany washing over me.
"He knows the stock opens in three hours."
"He knows that if he eliminates me before the opening bell, the legal emergency provisions will automatically freeze the Vance voting trust, plunging the company into receivership."
"He wants a public execution to shatter the family lineage once and for all."
I turned to Arthur.
"Initiate the emergency executive succession protocols," I commanded.
"Transfer all sovereign authority over the Vance Trust to an independent blind trust managed by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York."
"If I die this morning, Marcus gets nothing."
"Not a single share, not a single penny, not a single square inch of this empire."
Arthur looked at me with tears in his aged eyes, but he nodded and began inputting the irreversible authorization codes.
Before the final confirmation could execute, the main power grid of Vance Tower flickered and died.
The emergency red lights hummed to life instantly, casting the sprawling executive floor in deep, blood-red shadows.

The sound of heavy elevator cables snapping resounded through the service shafts.
The siege had arrived at our doorstep.
