Chapter 17 - The Midnight Board

By two in the morning, Vance Tower had been converted into a tactical war room.

Forensic coders, federal prosecutors, and my senior executive committee filled the boardroom, surrounded by multiple glowing screens displaying the global capital architecture of the Meridian Syndicate.

The biometric drive provided by Victoria had cracked open Marcus’s shadow network like an egg.

For decades, Marcus had used stolen Vance intellectual property and falsified sovereign debt notes to build an empire of illicit holdings across three continents.

Every transaction, every corrupt judge, and every compromised board member was cataloged with terrifying precision.

"Clara," Arthur said, approaching the head of the conference table where I sat, my eyes fixed on the live data streams.

"The sovereign debt bond matures at precisely nine o’clock this morning."

"Marcus has already filed the foreclosure petition in the London High Court of Justice."

"If the transfer goes through, the Meridian Syndicate automatically absorbs Vance Enterprises' controlling shares before the New York markets even open."

"How much capital do we need to trigger the defensive redemption clause?" I asked, not looking away from the terminal.

"Four hundred and twenty million dollars in liquid cash, deposited into the Bank of England clearing account," Arthur replied grimly.

"We have three hundred and eighty million in our primary reserves."

"We are forty million short, and the domestic banks are closed until morning."

"We cannot secure commercial credit in seven hours, Clara."

I looked around the room at the tired, anxious faces of the men and women who had stood by my father and now stood by me.

They were looking at me to surrender, to find an honorable compromise with Marcus.

Instead, I pulled open my father's original leather-bound ledger, which had been recovered from his safe after his passing.

On the final page, written in my father’s steady, unmistakable hand, was a list of private equity reserves held under a dormant charity established in my mother’s name.

"My mother didn't leave me jewelry, Arthur," I said quietly, turning the page toward him.

"She left me the Clara Vance Foundation endowment, untouched for twenty years."

"How much is in that account?" Arthur breathed, his eyes widening as he read the numbers.

"Sixty-two million dollars," I answered, rising to my feet.

"Arthur, draft the immediate liquidation order."

"Transfer the entire balance directly to the Bank of England clearing house."

"We are not negotiating with Marcus Vance."

"We are buying his sovereign bond out from under him, and when the sun rises over London, we are executing a hostile takeover of the Meridian Syndicate."

A collective breath was drawn across the entire boardroom.

This was no longer a defensive operation; it was a total war of annihilation.

"Get the London legal team on the secure line," I ordered, my voice ringing with absolute authority.

"Tell them the Queen of Vance Enterprises is calling in the debt."
