Chapter 9 - The Billionaire's Smear Campaign

Three days passed in a blur of agonizing physical therapy exercises,

sleepless nights,

and constant,

gnawing anxiety.

Despite the profound isolation of the cabin,

the outside world slowly began to bleed into our sanctuary.

Anna had driven into a small,

distant town to purchase basic supplies,

returning with a grim,

furious expression on her face.

She slammed a daily newspaper onto the wooden table,

the bold,

sensationalist headline screaming at me in massive black ink.

"Billionaire Heir’s Pregnant Wife Missing: Family Fears Mental Breakdown."

I stared at the glaring words,

my stomach plummeting instantly,

a cold sweat breaking out across my entire body.

Beneath the headline was a massive,

flattering photograph of my husband,

looking incredibly handsome,

deeply distressed,

and seemingly heartbroken.

"Read it,"

Anna spat,

her voice shaking with uncontrollable rage.

"They paid a massive PR firm to plant this garbage story in every major news outlet."

I picked up the paper with trembling hands,

forcing my eyes to scan the incredibly deceptive,

expertly crafted lies.

The article quoted anonymous family friends,

all claiming that I had been suffering from severe,

untreated prenatal depression,

exhibiting paranoid,

delusional behavior for months.

My mother-in-law had even given a tearful,

exclusive interview,

begging for my safe return,

claiming she only cared about the well-being of her precious grandchild,

and portraying herself as a loving,

deeply concerned matriarch.

"He says I fell down the stairs in a frantic,

delusional panic,"

I read aloud,

my voice cracking under the sheer weight of their audacity.

"He claims I fled the hospital because I was hallucinating,

and he is offering a fifty-thousand-dollar reward for any information leading to my location."

I dropped the newspaper as if it were on fire,

feeling a profound,

suffocating sense of helplessness threatening to drag me back into the dark abyss.

They were controlling the narrative,

using their massive wealth and social influence to paint me as the villain,

the crazy,

unstable woman who had kidnapped their royal heir.

If anyone saw me now,

they would not see a battered,

abused survivor,

they would see a mentally unstable fugitive,

and they would eagerly call the police to claim that massive financial reward.

"They are incredibly smart,"

I whispered,

tears welling up in my eyes,

blurring the horrible words on the page.

"They know that if they discredit my sanity before the video goes public,

people might actually doubt the evidence."

Anna grabbed my shoulders,

forcing me to look directly into her fierce,

unwavering eyes.

"Do not let them get inside your head,"

she commanded,

her grip tight,

grounding me.

"This is a classic,

textbook abuser tactic,

the desperate flailing of a man who knows he is losing control.

Evelyn already anticipated this smear campaign,

and she is preparing a massive,

undeniable counter-attack."

Anna pulled out the encrypted laptop,

quickly typing a secure message to our lawyer.

"They want to play games in the media,"

Anna growled,

hitting the send button with a vicious,

satisfying strike.

"We are going to let them dig a massive,

public grave,

and then we are going to bury them in their own lies."

I touched my stomach,

feeling the baby move,

May you like

and I realized that the fight was no longer just about survival,

it was about absolutely destroying the empire that built these monsters.
