Chapter 1 - The Monster at the Door

The hospital room was suffocatingly quiet,

broken only by the steady,

rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor beside my bed.

Every single beat felt like a countdown,

a reminder that my fragile sanctuary was about to be breached.

My sister,

Anna,

stood frozen near the foot of my bed.

Her knuckles were completely white,

gripping her phone as if it were the only weapon she had left in this terrifying world.

The evidence was saved,

securely locked away in a hidden cloud drive,

but the fear still coursed through my veins like ice.

He was coming,

and I knew exactly what he was capable of when his anger took control.

I looked down at my mangled foot,

heavily wrapped in thick white bandages,

elevated on a stack of pillows.

The throbbing pain was a constant,

cruel reminder of the nightmare I had just survived,

a nightmare orchestrated by the man who had promised to love me.

The hallway outside was brightly lit,

but it felt like a dark tunnel leading straight to my doom.

Suddenly,

heavy footsteps echoed against the polished linoleum floor,

growing louder,

growing faster.

My hand instinctively flew to my swollen stomach,

protecting the innocent life growing inside me.

"He is here,"

Anna whispered,

her voice trembling,

yet laced with a fierce determination I had never seen before.

I could not breathe,

my chest tightening with an overwhelming panic.

The door handle rattled violently,

shaking the entire frame.

"Let me in right now,"

his voice boomed from the other side,

muffled but dripping with venom.

"She is my wife,"

he shouted,

banging his fist against the heavy wood.

My mother-in-law’s shrill voice joined his,

piercing through the thick walls.

"You ungrateful girl,

open this door before we make things worse for you."

They were so arrogant,

so entirely convinced that they still held absolute power over my life,

even here in this public place.

I squeezed my eyes shut,

praying for the security guards to arrive before the door gave way.

"Do not move,"

Anna said to me,

stepping directly in front of the door.

She raised her voice,

shouting back at the monsters in the hallway.

"Security is already on their way,

and the police have been called."

There was a sudden,

heavy silence on the other side.

I could almost see the realization washing over his face,

the cold realization that he had finally lost control of the narrative.

"You are lying,"

he hissed through the crack under the door.

"Delete that video right now,

or I swear you will both regret it."

His threats,

which used to make me cower in submission,

suddenly sounded pathetic,

like a trapped animal realizing the cage was locked.

"It is already sent to my lawyer,"

Anna lied,

her voice remarkably steady,

though I could see her knees shaking.

The sound of heavy boots,

different from his,

suddenly flooded the hallway.

"Sir,

step away from the door immediately,"

a deep,

authoritative voice commanded.

It was the hospital security team,

and the relief that washed over me was so intense,

it brought fresh tears to my eyes.

The shouting continued outside,

but the voices began to fade,

moving further down the corridor as they escorted him away.

I was safe,

May you like

at least for this fragile moment,

but the real war had just begun.
