Chapter 15 - The Dawn of Freedom

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers finally pierced through the heavy,

lingering fog of the early morning,

illuminating the small,

battered cabin like a beacon of absolute salvation.

The violent storm had completely passed,

leaving behind a cold,

crisp air that smelled heavily of wet pine and incredible,

undeniable freedom.

Paramedics rushed immediately inside,

carefully loading a groggy,

concussed Anna onto a stretcher,

assuring me repeatedly that she was going to make a full,

complete recovery.

My husband was heavily shackled,

his face completely covered in dried blood,

his eyes devoid of the arrogant,

cruel spark that had terrified me for so many years.

As the officers forcefully shoved him into the back of the heavily armored police cruiser,

he turned to look at me one final time.

He didn't scream,

he didn't make any desperate threats,

he just stared,

finally realizing that the absolute,

unbreakable power he thought he held over me was entirely,

permanently gone.

I didn't look away,

I didn't cower,

I stood tall on the small wooden porch,

my hand resting fiercely over my stomach,

protecting the incredible life that had given me the strength to survive.

"It is completely over,"

the lead detective told me,

handing me a thick,

warm blanket to ward off the morning chill.

"He will absolutely never see the outside of a prison cell again,

and his mother is currently sitting in a cold holding cell,

crying for a lawyer."

I nodded slowly,

pulling the heavy blanket tightly around my trembling shoulders,

the massive,

exhausting weight of the past five years finally,

truly lifting from my battered soul.

Evelyn arrived shortly after,

looking incredibly sharp and completely unfazed by the early hour or the muddy,

treacherous roads.

"You did incredibly well,"

she said,

standing beside me on the porch,

watching the police cruiser disappear completely down the winding dirt road.

"The entire civil suit is moving forward immediately,

his assets are completely frozen,

and you will easily secure absolute,

full custody of this child."

The incredible nightmare was finally over,

the massive dragons had been completely slain,

and the dark,

terrifying castle had been burned entirely to the ground.

I rode in the ambulance with Anna,

holding her hand tightly,

watching the vibrant,

colorful sunrise slowly break over the distant mountain peaks.

The physical scars would undoubtedly take a long time to heal,

the terrifying memories would occasionally haunt my dreams,

but the absolute,

paralyzing fear was completely gone.

I was no longer the weak,

terrified victim they had brutally tortured,

I was a fierce,

unbreakable survivor,

a warrior who had walked directly through the fires of hell and emerged incredibly strong.

As I felt a gentle,

reassuring kick from my baby,

I smiled,

a true,

genuine smile that reached completely to my tired eyes.

We were finally safe,

May you like

we were finally free,

and the beautiful,
