Chapter 8 - Building the Armor of Justice

The next morning broke with a pale,
watery sunlight that barely managed to penetrate the thick canopy of the surrounding forest.
Anna had set up a secure,
encrypted satellite laptop on the small wooden dining table,
creating a temporary command center for our legal battle.
"Evelyn is ready for the video call,"
Anna announced,
adjusting the webcam carefully to ensure my bruised,
exhausted face was clearly visible.
Evelyn was the high-profile prosecutor Anna had promised,
a woman renowned in the legal world for destroying abusive,
wealthy men without a single ounce of mercy.
When her face appeared on the screen,
I saw a sharp,
intimidating woman with piercing gray eyes,
perfectly tailored clothes,
and a completely no-nonsense expression.
"Good morning,"
Evelyn said,
her voice crisp,
clear,
and exuding an absolute,
unshakable authority.
"I have reviewed the horrific footage your sister sent me,
the hospital records,
and the police reports from the night of your escape."
I swallowed hard,
feeling a sudden wave of nausea at the mention of that sickening video,
the undeniable proof of my ultimate degradation.
"Are they looking for me?"
I asked,
my voice betraying the deep,
lingering terror I still felt.
Evelyn leaned closer to the camera,
her expression hardening into a look of pure,
unadulterated predatory focus.
"They are turning the city upside down,"
she confirmed,
her tone grave,
serious,
but entirely unfazed.
"Your husband's family has hired three different private investigation firms,
and they are currently attempting to freeze your joint bank accounts,
claiming you stole a large sum of money before vanishing."
A cold,
bitter laugh escaped my lips.
"I left with nothing but the bloody clothes on my back,"
I stated,
my anger finally beginning to overshadow my fear.
"I know,"
Evelyn replied smoothly.
"Which is exactly why their financial manipulation will spectacularly backfire in court.
We are not just filing criminal charges for aggravated assault and attempted murder,
we are launching a massive civil lawsuit to completely freeze his assets before he can hide them."
Evelyn explained the legal strategy meticulously,
detailing how we would use their own arrogance against them.
Because my husband had proudly posted the video in a family group chat,
he had inadvertently provided digital,
time-stamped evidence of his guilt,
along with the undeniable complicity of his mother,
who had clearly incited the violence.
"The defense will likely try to claim temporary insanity,
or argue that the video was deep-faked,
because wealthy men rarely admit to their own monstrosities,"
Evelyn warned,
taking a slow sip of her coffee.
"They will attempt to drag your name through the mud,
digging into your past,
questioning your mental stability,
and painting you as an unfit,
hysterical mother."
I looked down at my heavily bandaged foot,
feeling the sharp,
biting pain that served as my daily reminder of the truth.
"Let them try,"
I said,
my voice surprisingly steady,
resonant with a newfound,
unbreakable strength.
"I have survived their physical torture,
and I will certainly survive their pathetic courtroom lies."
Evelyn smiled,
a sharp,
dangerous smile that promised absolute destruction for my enemies.
"That is exactly what I wanted to hear,"
she said.
"Rest up,
May you like
protect that baby,
and let me go to war for you."
