Chapter 2 - The Badge and the Truth

The heavy wooden door finally swung open,
and two police officers stepped into the quiet room.
They were followed closely by a nurse,
who immediately rushed to check my vitals.
"Ma'am,
are you alright?"
the older officer asked,
his eyes scanning the room,
taking in the sight of my bandaged foot,
my pale face,
and my heavily pregnant belly.
I could not find my voice at first,
the trauma still gripping my throat,
choking the words before they could escape.
Anna stepped forward,
her phone already unlocked and ready in her trembling hand.
"She is not okay,
officer,"
Anna said,
her voice breaking for the first time since this ordeal began.
"Her husband did this to her,
and his mother stood there encouraging him."
The younger officer pulled out a small notepad,
his expression shifting from professional concern to grim seriousness.
"We have them detained in the lobby,
but they are claiming she fell down the stairs,
and that the sister is trying to extort them for money,"
the older officer explained,
his tone completely neutral,
waiting for our response.
A bitter,
hollow laugh escaped my lips before I could stop it.
Fell down the stairs,
that was always his excuse,
always his perfect cover story for the bruises he left on my arms.
But not this time,
not when the evidence was undeniably clear.
"I have the video,"
Anna said firmly,
holding the phone out to the officer.
"He posted it to our family group chat,
trying to humiliate her,
trying to prove how much control he had."
The older officer took the phone,
pressing the play button on the screen.
The room fell completely silent,
except for the horrifying,
unmistakable sound of the metal hammer striking bone.
My mother-in-law’s cold,
heartless words filled the hospital room,
echoing off the sterile walls.
"Harder,
she still hasn't learned."
The officer's face turned completely white,
his jaw clenching so tight I thought his teeth might break.
He quickly paused the video,
handing the phone back to Anna with a look of pure disgust.
"Do you want to press charges?"
he asked,
turning his gaze directly to me,
his eyes filled with a sudden,
fierce empathy.
I looked at my stomach,
feeling a soft,
gentle kick from the life growing inside me.
For years,
I had stayed quiet,
hoping things would change,
hoping the love I thought we had would somehow fix him.
But you cannot fix a monster,
and you certainly cannot protect a child by keeping them in the dark.
"Yes,"
I whispered,
my voice gaining strength with every syllable.
"I want to press charges,
against both of them,
for assault,
and for attempted murder."
The officers nodded,
stepping out of the room to make the call that would officially end my marriage,
and hopefully,
lock my abusers away for a very long time.
Anna sat on the edge of the bed,
taking my cold hand in hers,
and we both cried,
letting out years of repressed pain,
fear,
and silent suffering.
The chains were finally broken,
but the scars,
May you like
both physical and mental,
would take a lifetime to heal.
