Chapter 14 - The Final Confrontation

The violent pounding on the heavy wooden door was significantly louder than the deafening thunder,
each brutal strike echoing like a physical blow against my fragile nerves.
"Open the door,"
his voice roared from the porch,
completely devoid of the charming,
calculated mask he usually wore,
revealing the absolute,
unhinged monster beneath.
"You ruined my entire life,
you ungrateful bitch,
and I am going to make you pay for everything."
I scrambled backward,
pushing myself off the sofa,
the agonizing pain in my foot completely ignored by the massive surge of pure adrenaline.
Anna stood firmly between me and the door,
the heavy iron poker clutched tightly in her shaking hands,
her eyes blazing with a fierce,
protective fury.
"The police are already on their way,"
Anna screamed back,
a desperate,
calculated lie meant to buy us precious time.
"You are a wanted fugitive,
if you break down that door,
you will spend the rest of your pathetic life in a concrete cell."
A loud,
manic laugh cut through the howling storm,
a sound so devoid of sanity it made my stomach violently churn.
"I have nothing left to lose,"
he yelled,
the heavy thudding against the wood intensifying,
the hinges groaning dangerously under the immense pressure.
"They took my company,
they took my money,
and they took my mother,
but I am taking my child,
and I am leaving you buried in these woods."
The heavy door suddenly splintered with a deafening crack,
the heavy metal deadbolt completely ripping away from the wooden frame.
He burst into the dark cabin,
soaking wet,
his expensive clothes torn and muddy,
his eyes wide,
bloodshot,
and completely filled with absolute,
murderous intent.
He lunged forward,
completely ignoring Anna,
his eyes locked entirely on me,
his hands outstretched like terrifying claws.
Anna swung the heavy iron poker with all her strength,
striking him violently across the shoulder,
the sickening sound of bone cracking echoing in the small room.
He roared in agony,
stumbling backward,
but the sheer,
insane adrenaline pumping through his veins kept him on his feet.
He backhanded Anna with a brutal,
devastating force,
sending her crashing violently into the wooden table,
her head striking the heavy corner with a sickening thud.
"Anna!"
I screamed,
watching my sister collapse completely motionless onto the floor.
He turned back to me,
a cruel,
triumphant smile twisting his bloodied face,
stepping slowly over Anna's unconscious body.
"It is just you and me now,"
he whispered,
pulling a thick,
heavy length of rope from his soaked jacket pocket.
I was cornered,
injured,
and heavily pregnant,
but the absolute terror that usually paralyzed me was suddenly,
completely replaced by a massive,
overwhelming wave of primal,
maternal rage.
I grabbed the heavy,
battery-operated lantern from the side table,
swinging it with every single ounce of strength I had left,
smashing it violently against the side of his head.
The glass shattered instantly,
the heavy battery pack striking his temple,
and he immediately dropped like a heavy stone,
crashing onto the floor next to my sister.
I stood over him,
breathing heavily,
my entire body shaking violently,
realizing that I had finally,
truly fought back,
and I had absolutely won.
I dropped the broken lantern,
rushing immediately to Anna's side,
frantically checking her pulse,
May you like
sobbing with absolute relief when I felt a strong,
steady beat beneath my trembling fingers.
