Chapter 13 - The Empire Crumbles

The immediate aftermath of the broadcast was absolute,
unmitigated chaos,
a massive storm that rapidly engulfed my husband's entire world.
Within hours,
the massive public outcry forced the District Attorney,
who had previously been stalling due to political pressure,
to officially file multiple felony charges against both my husband and his mother.
The charges were severe: aggravated assault with a deadly weapon,
kidnapping,
and attempted murder,
all carrying massive,
mandatory prison sentences.
Evelyn called us the next morning,
her usually stern face broken by a massive,
triumphant smile.
"They are completely panicking,"
she announced,
the deep satisfaction evident in her crisp voice.
"The family's massive corporate empire is currently experiencing a catastrophic stock crash,
several key investors have publicly pulled their funding,
and the board of directors is frantically trying to force his father to step down as CEO."
The sweet taste of justice was finally beginning to wash away the bitter ashes of my past.
However,
the news wasn't entirely perfect.
"The police raided the mansion this morning,"
Evelyn continued,
her tone suddenly shifting to a serious,
grave register.
"They arrested his mother without incident,
but your husband was absolutely nowhere to be found."
A cold,
icy chill immediately shot down my spine,
the old,
familiar terror threatening to rise again.
"He ran?"
I asked,
my voice trembling slightly,
my hand instinctively moving to protect my stomach.
"He is currently a highly sought-after fugitive,"
Evelyn confirmed,
her eyes narrowing with intense determination.
"His passport has been flagged,
his bank accounts are completely frozen,
and there is a massive statewide manhunt currently underway."
Knowing he was out there,
cornered,
desperate,
and likely incredibly furious,
made the small cabin feel significantly less safe.
Anna immediately reinforced the heavy locks on the door,
checked the perimeter cameras constantly,
and kept the heavy iron poker within arm's reach at all times.
We spent the next two days in a state of hyper-vigilant paranoia,
jumping at every single sound the forest made,
every rustling branch sounding like heavy footsteps approaching the door.
On the third night,
a massive,
violent thunderstorm rolled over the mountains,
the torrential rain violently lashing against the thin windows,
the deafening thunder masking any sounds from outside.
The power flickered wildly before dying completely,
plunging the cabin into absolute,
terrifying darkness,
lit only by the erratic,
blinding flashes of lightning.
"Stay exactly where you are,"
Anna commanded,
her voice barely audible over the roaring storm.
She quickly grabbed a heavy flashlight,
moving stealthily toward the front window to check the exterior cameras on her phone,
which were miraculously still running on battery power.
I sat frozen on the sofa,
my heart hammering violently against my ribs,
praying that the storm would quickly pass,
praying that the darkness was completely empty.
Suddenly,
Anna gasped,
a sharp,
terrified intake of breath that made my blood run completely cold.
"He is here,"
she whispered,
dropping the flashlight,
the beam illuminating her pale,
terrified face.
"He just completely bypassed the front gate,
and he is walking directly toward the porch."
The monster had finally found us,
and this time,
there were no police officers,
May you like
no security guards,
and nowhere left to run.
