Chapter 6 - The Audit Uncovers the Truth

The double doors of the executive boardroom swung open with a resounding thud.

Daniel was standing at the head of the mahogany conference table, pointing at a projected slide presentation.

Margaret was seated near the window, sipping coffee from a porcelain cup as if she owned the building.

CEO Robert Sterling sat at the middle of the table, flanked by our chief legal counsel and two board members.

Daniel’s voice trailed off mid-sentence as his eyes locked onto mine.

He gripped the edge of the podium, his knuckles turning white.

"Emma," Daniel stammered, his polished corporate facade fracturing instantly.

"You... you shouldn't be here... we thought you needed medical rest..."

Margaret set her coffee cup down with a sharp clatter on the saucer.

"Emma, dear, this is a private executive discussion regarding operational continuity," Margaret said with icy disdain.

"You have caused enough personal drama for one week."

"Robert, please ask her to wait in human resources until we conclude our review."

Robert Sterling adjusted his reading glasses and looked between Daniel and me with a deeply furrowed brow.

"Emma, Daniel reported that you were experiencing severe health issues that compromised your decision-making capacity."

"Is that what Daniel told you, Robert?" I asked, walking deliberately down the center of the room.

I placed three thick manila folders directly in front of the CEO, the legal counsel, and the head of security.

"I am in perfect physical and mental health," I stated clearly.

"What you are witnessing is not a medical crisis."

"It is a crude, desperate cover-up for grand larceny and corporate embezzlement."

Daniel’s face drained of all color, turning an ashen, sickly gray.

"What nonsense are you talking about?" Margaret hissed, rising from her chair.

"How dare you slander my son in front of his superiors!"

"Page one contains seventeen fraudulent invoices signed over the last twelve weeks," I said, completely ignoring Margaret’s outbursts.

"Every single payment was routed to Collins Maritime Enterprises, an LLC registered directly to Margaret Collins."

"The funds were authorized using my digital executive override credentials while I was off-site negotiating our Rotterdam terminal contract."

Robert Sterling opened the folder, his eyes darting rapidly across the printed banking wire transfers.

Chief Legal Counsel Arthur Vance picked up his phone and dialed the internal audit division immediately.

"The IP address used to bypass the security wall was traced this morning," I continued, pointing directly at Daniel.

"It originated from Daniel Collins’s office desktop computer at nine-thirty on Saturday morning, two hours before our wedding."

Daniel began to tremble visibly.

"Emma... please... it was just a temporary bridge loan..." Daniel stammered, sweat beading across his forehead.

"Our family firm was facing liquidity problems... I was going to replace the funds before the annual report..."

"You stole nearly half a million dollars from this corporation," Robert Sterling thundered, slamming his fist onto the table.

The roar of the CEO’s voice shook the entire room.

Margaret rushed toward the table, her hands waving frantically.

"Robert, listen to me! Daniel is brilliant! This is an accounting misunderstanding engineered by a bitter woman who broke off their engagement!"

"Shut up, Margaret!" Robert snapped, his eyes blazing with fury.

"Security, escort Mrs. Collins out of this building immediately."

"And call the Boston Police Department Financial Crimes Division."

Two uniformed security guards stepped into the room, their hands resting firmly on their duty belts.

Daniel slumped back into a leather chair, burying his face in his trembling hands as the trap he had laid snapped shut around his own neck.
