Chapter 18 - The Fall of the House of Vance

The flashbulbs were relentless, capturing every humiliating second of the raid.
Julian Collins was dragged out of the ballroom by two federal marshals, sobbing openly and pleading with reporters to turn their cameras away.
His mother’s grand ambition to marry him into my fortune had ended with both of them facing decades in federal penitentiaries.
Harrison Vance attempted to maintain his haughty posture, but as the steel cuffs clamped around his wrists, he turned his head toward me, his eyes burning with feral hatred.
"You think your grandfather was a saint, Clara?" Harrison spat, struggling against the grip of the federal agents.
"He destroyed my life! He took everything that belonged to me and gave it to a little girl!"
I walked slowly toward him, stopping just inches away from his face.
"My grandfather didn't destroy your life, Harrison," I said softly, so that only he could hear.
"He gave you every opportunity to be an honest man."
"You chose to be a thief, you chose to frame your own family, and you chose to partner with Margaret Collins."
"You thought my grandfather’s brownstone was your birthright."
"You thought this company was a trophy waiting to be stolen."
"Take a good look around this room, Uncle Harrison."
"Because the only thing you will ever inherit from the Vance family is the prison cell you built with your own greed."
Harrison was pushed through the double doors, the heavy oak swinging shut behind him.
The ballroom remained dead silent for three long seconds.
Then, an institutional shareholder in the second row stood up and began to applaud.
Within moments, the entire room—analysts, board members, and rival executives—was on its feet, giving a standing ovation that shook the chandelier crystals above.
Robert Sterling walked over to the podium, tears of profound relief glistening in his eyes.
He took my hand and raised it before the entire assembly.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Robert announced into the microphone over the thunderous applause.
"By unanimous decision of the remaining voting shares, the hostile takeover is officially null and void."
"The Aethelgard shares are frozen under federal receivership."
"And Clara Vance remains the undisputed leader of our global operations."
I looked out at the sea of applauding faces, feeling an overwhelming sense of vindication wash over me.
Twelve months of relentless attacks, smear campaigns, emotional betrayal, and corporate sabotage had all crashed against my unyielding resolve.
I had defended my grandfather’s honor.
May you like
I had saved the company from a predatory syndicate.
And I had shown every single person who ever underestimated me what happens when you try to take what I have rightfully earned.
