Chapter 5 - The Corporate Ambush

At eight o'clock on Monday morning, the glass doors of Vantage Global Logistics slid open.

I walked through the lobby wearing a tailored navy suit and crisp white silk blouse.

The corporate headquarters occupied seven floors of an obsidian glass tower overlooking the financial district.

Daniel worked as a senior procurement manager on the fourth floor, two levels beneath my executive suite.

When I stepped out of the elevator onto the sixth floor, my executive assistant, Sarah, rushed forward with a tablet in hand.

"Emma, thank God you are here," Sarah whispered, her face pale with anxiety.

"What happened?" I asked, walking steadily toward my corner office.

"Daniel Collins arrived at seven in the morning with his mother," Sarah explained hurriedly.

"They demanded an emergency audience with CEO Robert Sterling."

"Daniel told Mr. Sterling that you suffered an acute nervous breakdown over the weekend and fled your own wedding."

"He is currently in the boardroom claiming that your emotional instability makes it impossible for you to oversee the transatlantic shipping expansion."

I stopped outside my office door, a faint, dangerous smile touching my lips.

"Is that what he told them?" I asked softly.

"Yes," Sarah nodded nervously. "He brought a stack of files."

"He is trying to convince the executive committee to reassign your operational signature authority to him immediately."

"They think they can steal in the boardroom what they failed to steal at the altar," I said quietly.

"Sarah, I need you to pull up the complete vendor procurement ledger for the Northeast quadrant from the last twelve months."

"Cross-reference every invoice approved by Daniel with the shipping accounts registered to Collins Maritime Enterprises."

Sarah blinked in surprise, then her eyes widened with instant comprehension.

"Collins Maritime? Isn't that his family's private consulting firm?"

"It is Margaret's shell company," I told her, my voice dropping to a sharp whisper.

"Daniel spent six months begging me to approve their subcontracting bids, but I refused because they lacked safety certifications."

"Let us see if Daniel found a way around my refusal while I was busy preparing for the wedding."

Sarah’s fingers flew across her keyboard as she logged into the master database.

Less than three minutes later, a series of red audit flags flashed across the screen.

"Oh, my God," Sarah gasped, pressing her hands to her mouth.

"Over four hundred thousand dollars in expedited freight fees routed directly to Collins Maritime over the last ninety days."

"All approved using an unauthorized digital copy of your executive clearance override."

I took a deep, steady breath, feeling the final pieces of their scheme fall into place.

Daniel hadn't just wanted my job because of male insecurity.

He needed my director title and my signature authority because he was drowning in corporate fraud.

He knew that our quarterly internal audit was scheduled for the end of the month.

If he had married me and taken over my position, he could have buried the paperwork forever.

"Print three copies of every fraudulent invoice, Sarah," I commanded quietly.

"And notify corporate security to meet me outside the boardroom in five minutes."
