Chapter 13 - The Sealed Geneva Ledger

For three straight days, Rachel and I turned my brownstone's private library into a forensic war room.

Dusty leather binders from my grandfather’s maritime firm, Vance & Hartfield Logistics, were stacked in towering columns across the oriental rug.

My grandfather, Arthur Vance, had founded the original transatlantic supply line that Vantage later absorbed.

He had been a man of uncompromising integrity, a pillar of the community who taught me how to read cargo manifests before I could ride a bicycle.

The idea that Margaret Collins could taint his legacy made my blood boil.

"Clara, look at this entry from October nineteen-ninety-four," Rachel said, beckoning me over to the drafting table.

She pointed to an international bill of lading transferring heavy industrial freight from Rotterdam to Baltimore.

The consignee was an entity named 'Helios Meridian Trust.'

"That’s strange," Rachel muttered, adjusting her reading glasses.

"There is no customs clearance certificate attached to this duplicate file."

"And the signature on the authorization line isn't your grandfather’s handwriting."

I leaned in closer, studying the bold, jagged pen strokes on the aged parchment.

My eyes narrowed as recognition hit me like a physical blow.

"That signature belongs to Julian’s father, Richard Collins Senior," I whispered.

Richard Collins Senior had been my grandfather’s junior partner before dying of a sudden heart attack in the late nineties.

Margaret had always claimed that her late husband was the true visionary behind the logistics empire.

She had spent years boasting at charity galas that my grandfather had pushed Richard out of the company’s biggest profits.

"Richard Collins didn't just sign this," I said, flipping through the corresponding correspondence.

"He used my grandfather's corporate seal without board authorization to move millions of dollars in untaxed bullion."

Rachel gasped, looking up at me in horror.

"He committed the crime under your grandfather's company name."

"And then he died before the statute of limitations expired, leaving the paper trail buried inside your family's records."

"Margaret didn't find dirt on my grandfather," I realized, the pieces falling into place with terrifying clarity.

"She found evidence of her own late husband’s massive fraud, and she altered the records to frame Arthur Vance."

If those altered documents were leaked to the financial press during a delicate stock acquisition, the board would be forced to suspend me pending an independent ethics investigation.

And while I was sidelined, Aethelgard could execute their hostile tender offer completely unopposed.

"They aren't just trying to bankrupt the company, Rachel," I said grimly.

"They are trying to execute a legacy assassination."

"They want the public to believe that my entire career was built on stolen money."

Just as the realization settled in, my security system chimed from the front hallway downstairs.

The motion sensors on the perimeter of the brownstone had been triggered.

Someone was standing right outside my garden gate in the dead of night.
