Chapter 8 - The Reckoning of Ryan Bennett

The preliminary hearing for the state and federal charges against Ryan took place at the Regional Justice Center in downtown Las Vegas.

The courtroom was packed with journalists, corporate associates, and former mutual acquaintances who had once attended our dinner parties.

Ryan sat at the defense table clad in an ill-fitting navy suit provided by the public defender’s office.

He looked broken, his hair hastily combed, his hands trembling as the prosecutor read the extensive indictment.

The charges included fifteen counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, identity theft, and commercial embezzlement totaling over one point two million dollars.

The evidence presented by our forensic team was incontrovertible.

Every forged signature, every concealed transfer to Caribbean dummy accounts, and every unauthorized lease agreement was laid out in high-resolution detail on the courtroom displays.

When the judge asked if the defense had any mitigating evidence to present, Ryan’s attorney had virtually nothing to offer.

Then the prosecution called Vanessa Moretti to the stand as a hostile witness under a limited immunity subpoena.

Vanessa took the stand wearing a drab grey sweater, looking thoroughly terrified.

Rather than protecting Ryan, she turned on him with vicious, venomous desperation.

She testified under oath that Ryan had orchestrated the entire plot, convincing her that he had earned the funds through independent property transactions.

She claimed he had promised to take care of her if she helped him transfer the files from my office computer after hours.

Ryan leaped out of his chair at the defense table, screaming that she was a lying whore who had begged him to steal more money so they could buy a yacht.

Bailiffs tackled Ryan onto the defense desk, pinning his arms behind his back and placing him in heavy steel restraints.

The judge banged her gavel repeatedly, threatening both parties with immediate criminal contempt.

I sat in the front row of the gallery beside Luca, watching the spectacle with detached, icy calmness.

These were the two people who had sat across from me at Thanksgiving dinners, smiling, laughing, and plotting my downfall.

Now they were tearing each other apart like wild dogs over scraps of rotten meat.

The judge denied Ryan bail, declaring him an extreme flight risk based on his prior unauthorized international departure.

He was remanded to custody to await his formal sentencing hearing.

As the bailiffs led Ryan away in handcuffs, his eyes met mine across the wooden railing.

There was no arrogance left in his gaze, only a pathetic, bottomless terror.

I did not offer him a single look of pity.

I turned my back on him and walked out into the bright Nevada sunshine with Luca by my side.
