Chapter 11 - Whispers in the Champagne

The crystal chandeliers of the Bellagio grand ballroom cast a warm, golden glow over the celebrating crowd.
Every major political figure, corporate titan, and philanthropist in the state of Nevada was raising a glass in our honor.
Luca stood beside me, his arm resting gently against my waist, radiating the calm authority of a man who had conquered the desert.
My consulting firm had achieved unprecedented success in record time.
The joint venture for the children’s hospital had already secured fifty million dollars in private endowments.
People who had once avoided my gaze when Ryan threw me out into the street were now waiting in line just to shake my hand.
They smiled with practiced warmth, pretending they had always believed in my resilience.
I smiled back with razor-sharp courtesy, knowing exactly what each smile was worth.
Power in Las Vegas was not given; it was seized, defended, and worn like armor.
As the orchestra began a slow waltz, a silver-haired server approached our VIP booth with a leather-bound silver tray.
On the tray lay a single, unsealed envelope of heavy linen parchment.
Luca frowned slightly and motioned for his head of security, Gabriel, to step forward.
Before Gabriel could touch it, the server bowed politely and murmured that the letter had been hand-delivered by an executive courier from New York.
The server retreated into the sea of black tuxedos and evening gowns before another word could be spoken.
I reached out and lifted the envelope from the tray.
My name was written on the front in sharp, immaculate calligraphy: Mrs. Claire Bennett.
The use of the married title was not an accident; it was a deliberate provocation.
I broke the wax seal, which bore the crest of a falcon perched above two crossed keys.
Inside was a single card containing three handwritten sentences.
"A kingdom built on stolen spoils will never withstand the winter."
"Ryan was merely a foolish boy playing with toys that never belonged to him."
"Prepare your defenses, darling, because the true Bennett bloodline has arrived to collect the debt."
I felt a faint chill race across my skin, though my expression remained utterly calm.
Luca leaned in closer, his dark eyes scanning the paper over my bare shoulder.
His jaw tightened, the muscles flexing beneath his olive skin.
I knew that crest.
Ryan had worn a signet ring with the exact same falcon when we first met eight years ago.
He had always claimed that his family had lost their ancestral fortune back east before he moved west to build his empire.
He had lied about everything else in his life, and now it was clear he had lied about his pedigree as well.
"Eleanor Bennett," Luca whispered, his tone dropping into an icy register.
I turned to look at him, my heart quickening.
"You know who sent this?" I asked.
Luca folded the note and slid it into his inner jacket pocket with deliberate slowness.
"Ryan's mother," Luca answered, his gaze locking onto mine.
"Everyone in Manhattan believed she died in a private sanitarium twelve years ago."
May you like
"If she is alive, Claire, she didn't come to save Ryan."
"She came to burn down everything we just built."
