Chapter 1 - The Midnight Compact

The glass conference room on the forty-second floor of the Bellagio corporate tower offered a panoramic view of the Las Vegas Strip.

I had spent three grueling months preparing the financial restructuring proposal for Nevada’s premier casino conglomerate.

My hands were steady as I advanced the presentation slide.

Then my phone screen lit up against the polished mahogany wood.

Two text messages sat on the lock screen from Ryan, my husband of five years.

He wrote that he was leaving with Vanessa, my closest friend since college.

He instructed me not to look for them.

A single image accompanied the text.

They stood side by side beneath the neon departures board at Harry Reid International Airport.

Ryan wore his bespoke charcoal blazer, smiling with an ease I had not seen in years.

Vanessa’s left hand rested against his lapel, her fingers intertwined with his.

Draped over her shoulders was the Italian cashmere coat I had bought in Milan just two weeks prior.

Around her throat hung the vintage sapphire pendant that my late mother-in-law had given me as an heirloom on our wedding day.

The breath left my lungs in a sharp, agonizing gasp.

I excused myself from the presentation, claiming a sudden medical emergency.

I collapsed onto the cold concrete steps of the fire escape stairwell.

My phone vibrated repeatedly, but neither Ryan nor Vanessa answered my frantic calls.

Every memory from the past five years rushed through my mind like shattered glass.

I recalled Vanessa consoling me whenever Ryan complained about my long working hours.

She had always urged me to be softer, more yielding, and more submissive to his fragile ego.

Now I understood that every piece of advice had been an intentional wedge driven into my home.

When I returned to our suburban home in Summerlin, the closets were gutted.

His designer luggage, watches, and personal documents had vanished.

On the granite kitchen island lay a handwritten note.

Ryan claimed my corporate ambition had cast a shadow over his masculinity.

He claimed Vanessa provided the emotional warmth and worship that I was incapable of offering.

Before I could burn the paper, my mother phoned through tears.

My father had suffered a massive coronary event and was currently in the cardiac intensive care unit.

I spent the entire night at the Valley Hospital Medical Center, listening to monitors beep while my father breathed through an oxygen mask.

He squeezed my fingers and whispered that he wanted to recover so he could hold our future children.

I swallowed my tears and nodded, concealing the fact that my life was in ashes.

Dawn broke in shades of bruised purple across the Mojave desert.

When I pulled into the underground parking garage of my apartment complex, three black Cadillac Escalades were blocking the exit ramp.

A towering figure in a tailored charcoal suit emerged from the lead vehicle.

It was Luca Moretti.

In Las Vegas, Luca was both respected and feared as the undisputed head of Moretti Holdings.

He wielded tremendous financial and real estate power across the valley.

Yet that morning, his dark eyes held a dangerous, exhausted stillness.

He informed me that his wife had fled the country with my husband.

We sat inside a secluded private dining alcove twenty minutes later.

He revealed that Vanessa had texted him that she had found genuine soul-level passion.

I uttered a dry, humorless laugh and remarked that we had both committed our lives to sociopaths.

A faint, calculating glimmer touched Luca’s gaze.

He leaned across the table and proposed that we join forces publicly and romantically.

He wanted the world to see the betrayed spouses thriving together while the runaways choked on their scandal.

I called him insane and refused the proposition outright.

Luca placed a heavy obsidian business card upon the white tablecloth.

He told me that once the shock wore off and the silence became deafening, I would realize that survival required leverage.

Twelve hours later, as midnight came and went, I sat on the floor of my empty bedroom holding that card.

The betrayal burned through my veins like poison.

I tapped the number on my screen.

May you like

The line connected after a single ring.

Luca answered, speaking my name before I could say a word.
